@freezr neither do I .. but that was the point I was trying to make.
It's either the other big players realize that the Linux market is completely under Red Hat control and they do something ( really big, a real schism ) to differentiate from them .. or they give up and face extinction .. like _so_ many other before them.
@gnemmi @freezr @claudiom @thedaemon @ParadeGrotesque @stefano there’s probably a lesson here from the SCO debacle, for those of us who remember that far back …
@darkuncle I do .. I was there frantically pressing f5 while SCO share were going down in flames until it got de listed from NASDAQ. Fun times! 🤣
But in all honesty, I fail to see the relation 🤔
@gnemmi @freezr @claudiom @thedaemon @ParadeGrotesque @stefano I haven’t thought through it much yet, but SCO tried (and failed) to force the community into its pocket through copyright and legal shenanigans, and I have a feeling RedHat^WIBM may not have been paying attention to this history.
@darkuncle Oh! I think I get your point now, but I'm not sure it applies to our present scenario.
What I mean is: it is not a matter of licenses this time. It's a matter of actual tech, and I think RH/IBM got that good. That's why they are the ones who developed the techs that shape the present ( and future ) of the Linux "state of affairs", while every other vendor limits itself to "follow" in the hope they get a share of the market by keeping "compat".
Honestly - as a Red Hat Certified Engineer (which is worth just as much as the ink to print the PDF, work got to pay for it) - I can't think of any vital, or even important *technology* they have a lock on. They have mindshare among executives, but so does Microsoft, as far as that goes.
Given any choice, I avoid the red hat family entirely, and it doesn't slow me down.
Sadly - is red hat *worse* than, say, debian? I can't tell you for sure, but with red hat, *I know how the sausage is made*. At least I'm not paying the red hat tax.
