Well it had to happen eventually. #Scripps is retiring FLIP (FLoating Instrument Platform). This is an amazing piece of engineering (and soooo weird on the inside - everything pivots, so walls become floors). The #ship to be towed out to a location, and it would literally flip, sinking most of the ship directly down to give a *very stable platform for #oceanography research. Launched in 1962.

@darkuncle

That's good. It means your concience works. We need more management where that hasn't atrophied.

@darkuncle

It's kind of sick when you stand back and say it out loud. Those aren't "reports" or "assets" - they're people. The "Personnel" department is now "Human Resources". We don't fire people - we have a "reduction in force" or "layoffs". All so we can feel better about treating them like animals or worse. It's tragic, really.

@darkuncle

It's a big part of why I left management. Juggling the conflicting priorities is exhausting. It's probably easier - and explains a lot - when you can de-humanize your co-workers by calling them "reports" or "assets" - but that's not me.

@darkuncle well - it did happen. See other toots - the $350k is actually $50k, $100k, $200k and they blinked.

@darkuncle

Ah, found more info. The fine was $50k *per day* - doubling every day. So it was $50k + $100k +$200k and then they turned it over. That turns into millions super quickly.

@darkuncle

One assumes Elon isn't opening the mail. But assuming he's doing it on purposes, it's fine, $Fine, $FINE$ - then the US Marshals show up and inform the company officers that these fine people who came with them are their boss now, not Elon. The courts can and do remove operative control over companies that don't comply with court orders. And if there's evidence it *was* Elon intentionally doing it - obstruction of justice is a crime all it's own. Point is - there's no scenario where the court gets bored and gives up and goes away if you ignore the request. Maybe Elon is rich enough that fines escalating by orders of magnitude are nothing to him - but control? He won't let that happen.

@darkuncle

The fine is step 1. If they ignore the fine, step 2 is usually a bigger fine. Step 3 involves court-appointed oversight of internal operations to ensure compliance. You don't want step 3. You really don't want 1 or 2 either. It happens all the time, but usually it's bankruptcy and chemical spills and so on that trigger it, because *sane* companies respond to (or contest) a subpoena promptly rather than just ignore it.

No, guys, they have not achieved "net energy gain" (theguardian.com/environment/20) because you're only counting the energy IN the laser, no the energy it takes to FIRE the laser, which is hundreds, maybe thousands of times more.

It's misleading and irresponsible to let people think we're anywhere near break-even in fusion.

@qqmrichter @Popehat

I doubt many are, it's super boring. :awesome:

But by default, every mastodon user has their own rss feed. I actually use it for following some of the super-content-aggregator folks, the ones who post or re-toot a ton of excellent things a day, because I consume those differently than random postings.

@qqmrichter @Popehat

The "if they so choose" includes just throwing the rss feed associated with every mastodon account into any rss newsreader. If Popehat blocked me, after a good cry I could just drop his mastodon rss feed into NetNewsWire or any other rss reader and keep following him. Blocking is like closing the door in someone's face - but it doesn't stop anyone from coming in anonymously.

@Popehat

It's worth pointing out that blocking a user *does nothing to them*. It's about yourself. You don't see their bullshit anymore. And they can very easily continue to see yours if they so choose - every mastodon accounts is a rss feed. It just you choosing to ignore them in a definitive way.

Block people who are annoying. All dudebrah arguments against — that it’s weak, soft, etc. — apply equally to not drinking urine.

“Dude, you don’t drink urine? That’s weak bro.”

“Gross. Why would I drink urine? I don’t want to.”

“Maybe you’re just too soft bro. What a pussy.”

@Remittancegirl @mayaisloading slatestarcodex.com/2014/03/20/ is instructive on this mindset. tl;dr: Closeted folks in repressive areas assume everyone is like themselves, forcing themselves to be straight for the good of society. That literally explains all of their fears about “grooming” and the slippery slope. Fascinating read.
