Dream on. Last time I looked, Starmer wasn't gonna undo Brexit. That's something that needs a huge lot of undoing.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but linking masks so intensely to covid specifically and not larger disease control in general was, and continues to be, a huge mistake. Obviously masking became much more common with the rise of covid in the U.S. and other places, but it's been a known - and used, form of disease prevention elsewhere for 100 years.

Tying masking to covid freaks out the people who are too in denial about covid to actually do anything about it - a wall immediately goes up before an interaction has even happened. It also misses the point that they're useful for other things - it raises the level of diseases in general that are going around. And maybe most importantly, it creates an entire culture of masks as symbols rather than as actually useful tools. When people see masks as a symbol of fear, a reminder of death or a difficult time in their life, or a sign that someone must be sick to be wearing one and so should be avoided, it creates a much more difficult terrain to build solidarity or even just effectively communicate. The practical use case has been replaced with concepts for many people - and that shift has a high body count.

The original tooter posted no comment about this but it certainly is a good development for

Ya, I can understand keeping fantasyland in fantasyland though I'd like to point out exceptions among those performers who share their personal stories and hardships and do very well nonetheless--even when they were female comedians going down that rough, rough professional road dominated by males.

Carol Burnette case in point, and she was featured as a comedian as far back as the original Twilight Zone. 30 years ago? That road got so much easier for the likes of Judy Tenuta.

Judy was also preceded by Cloris Leachman and Phillis Diller, two other megawatt trailblazers.

I understand that Danny Kaye was no great family man in real life, but here's a toast to all the kids who delighted in his public one. And to Hans Christian Anderson.

I should add that I have those same tunes on my play list, for me to hear now and then.

Louis Prima, Guy Mitchell, Milton Berle, ...here's a sample, Guy Mitchell:

Yeah, I had those moments with my dad, to be sure. Playing recordings of the music he was familiar with in his younger days brougth fourth associated memories that would get him talking, but he also got all judgy about the music I picked out...all lighthearted novelty music that my mom was into. Well, I tried.

Of course. More theraputic for you than for the one you're visiting. And that would depend on how many decades have passed. There comes a point where the past is simply water under the bridge. Before you get to that point, that would make sense.
