"Today’s Gaza demo was massive, with only nine arrests. Hundreds of thousands marched in London as part of over a hundred huge protests worldwide." This kind of detail has always fascinated me ever since I marched with a million-or-two others in London on February 15th, 2003 and police just faded away before us: if our "hate marches" are full of ill-intended, inherently violent protesters, then why are there so few arrests when the numbers are bigger? By the logic of political rhetoric, the more of us demonstrators, the more violence and therefore arrests there would be. But no - in fact, of course, smaller groups make it easier for cops to target, harass, intimidate, attack, and indeed arrest protestors. I find that very telling.
