Well, there should be a caveat to that--and I speak as a volunteer for their Off The Bus project. Sometimes the effort of getting direct information out is more important than pay and making public the on-the-ground voting situation was more important to me than getting paid for it.

The bigger the pay wall, the dumber the voting public is going to be because they're not going to see information essential for making good choices. For that reason I was also an unpaid contributor to MSNBC's Vine before they shut that down.

A shadowy new organization attacking the climate efforts of Canadian cities is infiltrating Google searches and ads in the New York Times and other publications online.

The group — Voice for Energy — bills itself as a platform for Canadians to "speak up" against municipalities implementing measures to reduce or ban natural gas to "protect" people’s so-called "energy choice."

The group keeps its provenance secret, with no phone numbers or staff listed on its website.
A search of its metadata through the Whois database reveals the domain name was created in April 2023, but any information that could identify the website's owners is redacted.

Last week, some Canadian New York Times readers were greeted with an ad from the organization targeting Burnaby, B.C.'s recent decision to ban gas hook-ups in new buildings.

Canadian Google users have also been targeted by the group, as reported by DeSmog reporter Geoff Dembicki and according to the platform's ad transparency database.
Those ads have been running Canada-wide since mid-October accompanied by photos of diverse, happy-looking families. The most recent ad was published on Jan. 10, 2024.

"It is a fear campaign. They're trying to get people scared that if we don't keep natural gas, then we won't have reliable electricity," said Julien Beaulieu, a Université de Sherbrooke lecturer.
"That's what this campaign is about. It is about making people scared of renewables

I had this discussion on Lemmy, but there are no AI artists.

Unless they can grab art tools and have the same amount of effort making the same image they "created" with AI, including training and practice, then I will never see "writing good prompts" as art especially since that same art steals from the artist that the AI replicates.

If you use it for memes or something inconsequential like that then that's okay as long as you never say something to the effect of "I created this".

The bed in the first picture was one of my homemade ones. I remember that I was low on bags of soil and out of finished compost, and I filled the base of that bed with really pretty fresh shavings and horse manure. I knew they’d lock up the nitrogen for a year or so but eventually it would be a good bed.
Various plants failed to grow there for a year, and then last summer I got some oregano to take. I wasn’t sure what happened to it after the chickens rampaged through the bed, but I found most of the oregano plants when I went looking. There were four big enough to save. I moved two to a weird narrow planter with some garlic and stuffed the other two in the corners of their original bed. They’re protected by wire cloches and pottery shards, and hopefully the chickens will be distracted by all the fresh compost.
But what’s neat is that each clump of oregano had an absolutely massive root system that was completely entwined with the mycelium at the bottom of the bed! When my stall shavings + horse manure gets trapped in an anaerobic layer, it turns into a solid, spongy mass of mycelium - I’ve seen it happen in these beds and also in the compost piles. And plants apparently love it! There’s obviously some symbiosis occurring. I had to fork the plants out of deep holes and they came out like layer cakes - a layer of white-tan mycelium bound to a layer of lovely finished compost by a mass of oregano roots.
It was cool!
