@Empiricism @mustapipa

I think of it as "For our species there are stupid limits and there are smart limits."

After (if) we sort our climate "oops" there are still after all limits, due to A=4πr2.

(And if we can't competently manage -this- gratuitously and richly supplied sphere we've no reason to believe we can do better-- starting from impoverishment-- on another. First things first, thinking of Elon & similar.)

A gorgeous eruption for your feed. This is #Ruapehu during the 1995-96 eruption in Aotearoa/New Zealand. My grandfather took a bunch of volcano photos, he absolutely loved them. I inherited them years later as a volcanologist and I know he would have loved me sharing them with the world ❤️

I don't know exactly how I'll be using Mastodon just yet, but here's an intro: Hi, I'm Celeste! I'm an environmental seismologist, mostly specializing in seismic signals generated by glacier processes. I'm currently a postdoctoral fellow at UCalgary, which I started after finishing my PhD at Caltech in June. I sometimes take cool pictures in the field as Queen Elsa for fun and for outreach, like this one near my current field site in British Columbia:

It's not that difficult and it's not silencing.

@Aravosis Three days ago you kicked the door open to a building whose interior you know little about and are surprised when that community has a standing code of doing things that feels foreign to you. Conversations were already happening, communities were already formed with routines and norms.

The CW is not only for trigger warnings, for many its a neat wrapper so that everyone's not scrolling through a wall of text.

I don't think treating this as a surrogate mother for Twitter is the most appropriate approach.

Your commentary approaches this from a concern about "view-metrics." Don't worry, people will still engage with content and still click on "show more."

A Saskatchewan man has been killed fighting in eastern Ukraine, the second Canadian known to have died defending the country against a Russian invasion.

Joseph Hildebrand, a 33-year-old Canadian Forces veteran, was killed in the front-line city of Bakhmut, in the Donetsk region, on Monday.

Loss of Arctic summer sea ice now inevitable by 2050

"The loss, expected to happen at least once by 2050, spells the end of an entire ecosystem that has evolved for year-round ice cover. Its other effects, from disrupted weather around the globe to rising sea levels and ocean acidification, are barely beginning to be understood."

Are eight billion humans too many for planet #Earth? As we reach this milestone on November 15, most experts say the bigger problem is the overconsumption of resources by the wealthiest residents.

Canada's former environment minister and now chair of the UN’s High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) 'lays down the law' on net-zero greenwashing.

- any organization making net-zero pledges can’t also be supporting the expansion of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

- organizations must set short-term targets to lower emissions.

- technologies that don’t work as advertised — like carbon capture technology or experimental next-generation nuclear reactors — don’t have a place in a credible 2030 target.

- companies and cities can’t buy their way to net zero with carbon offsets; they need to genuinely reduce their own emissions and the emissions they finance.

- companies must also create transition plans for their business models, including phasing out fossil fuels and scaling up renewable energy projects, and align their lobbying with climate solutions instead of delay tactics.

"It’s surreal and horrifying that we all know they are irreversibly destroying the planet but our governments continue expanding fossil fuels anyway while the media looks on." - Peter Kalmus, NASA climate scientist

The important point to me is that #SeaLevel is a multigenerational problem. Adapting to sea level rise 50 or 100 years from now will depend on steps we start to take today.

Atomkonzern EDF: weitere 4 Reaktoren kaputt und über den Winter nicht in Betrieb.

Die Strompreise steigen dem entsprechend in die Höhe.

'EDF France says another four reactors broken and won't be operating over winter, sending power prices soaring and increasing fears of blackouts.'

Nuclear, deeply intermittent.
