Things do not seem to be going well on the bird site.

The #Twittermigration is continuing, as Musk’s changes have lead more and more users to the #fediverse and other competing services. In our latest #newsletter, Moment Social Media manager @AndrewMichaels talks about how we’re responding to Musk’s leadership of Twitter, and what it means for us.

It’s been such a pleasure to see and be part of a group of journalists coming together so quickly to work on journa.host. The current verification process is imperfect, but improving rapidly. Thank you for your patience while we figure it out!

@ahiatt Also, use a password manager. Bitwarden solid, free, slightly less polished than paid Lastpass, 1Password. The latter two can also do 2FA for you. Otherwise, Authy is a good 2FA app. Don’t use Google Authenticator as you can’t back up the accounts.

@nathan That’s fantastic! Love to see posts in languages other than my own, don’t always have time to translate each one manually.

Legal explainer thread (fun but long)

Even though this is a super fun thread reading Trump's latest legal filing in his Special Master case, I will try the CW function so that the whole thread doesn't pop up at people.

If I did this wrong, please tell me.

Trump's lawyers filed their response to the DOJ's 11th circuit appeal in the Judge Cannon special master case.

Here's Trump's response: …docs-cdn-prod.news-engineering

Shall we read it together? 🤓

Skeptical Science's New Research #45 for 2022 is out, including 126 articles by ~968 authors publishing in 64 journals, all reporting on matters related to our own rapid climate change. This week slightly under half are open access in one (legal) form or another.

Appetizers include 'Beaver dams overshadow climate extremes in controlling riparian hydrology and water quality,' wherein Dewey et al. explain how the largest N. American rodents can be powerful allies.

Hey friends --

Looks like I'll be on Velshi this Saturday morning talking about what the midterms suggest about the state of democracy -- and what insights history has to offer.

While it could have been worse, all told, we're still in big trouble.

When will 1.5 °C #globalwarming be exceeded?
We need to filter out short-term variability, hence use a trend line.
At the current rate we'll exceed 1.5 °C between the years 2035 and 2040 (using 20-year versus 50-year linear trend lines). Using NASA Gistemp data.

We’re Probably Going to Fuck This Up

I barely know what I’m doing on this platform, and yet I’ve found myself explaining it to countless people over the past two weeks. The thing I keep saying is, “It’s actually nice. And it’s good for conversation.” Having spoken with several long-time users, I’ve come to appreciate all the thought and work that’s been put into making it so long before we invaders arrived. I like it here, but I can’t help fearing that we are going to make this a Bad Place soon.
