This new idea that all of twitter could go behind a paywall seems completely off the rails (theverge.com/2022/11/7/2344626). Do they really think this could be a viable business model? Do you?

I'm very sceptical, given the available alternatives and the whole craziness that these developments entail.

On that note, I'm very glad that Mastodon as a (federated) platform already existed - still curious about how many academics already made the switch...

@tklebel I've seen three new serves catering to biologists that have each picked up about 1000 users so far. Plus many other new users on older science-themed instances (like mine, qoto.org)
