What’s with the followers:following ratio shaming on this site?
This is an ever present complaint about my feed.
First of all, it seems stupid. If you don’t want to read my feed, don’t follow me.
But it’s also focusing on the wrong metric I think. I follow 370 people. That’s more than the number followed by most of the people calling me out. Yet they somehow think I’m not engaging.
Second, I respond to a large fraction of the replies to my posts. That can be 100+ a replies a day.
It’s particularly interesting because literally today I proposed limiting the number of followers that I have. Numerous people suggested that was elitist and exclusionary. The same day people called me out for following far fewer than I am followed by. To satisfy everyone I would have to follow 30,000 people. That would certainly ruin my sense of *social* experience here.
For a supposed refuge from Twitter, this place sure can be preachy and judgmental.
@ct_bergstrom I think Mastodon is preachy and judgemental because it's built as a sort of intentional community, rather than a simple transactional relationship. I think many people just need to get their head around the fact that Mastodon as a whole is an open network with all types of people in it. They may want a community of peers who use Mastodon in the same way, but the rest of us are fine with the idea that some people get more attention than others...some do more content producing and others do more consuming.
