@kyleha @acjay QOTO would federate. The number of users on Corporate-todon would probably quickly surpass the rest of the fediverse. A lot of the big names would probably leave twitter for Corporate-todon....and maybe a lot of the Twitter refugees would follow.

Hi all, I'm a freelance science journalist covering life sciences and tech, bylines

Maybe you all know this already but twitter allowed academics who are otherwise marginalised by white, male hieracrchies to enjoy reach and visibility. (Yes, I count myself as a beneficiary here).

For many who have 'odd' names that don't get cited as much, or people who cannot travel to present talks easily, or are not invited as often or speak in unfamiliar accents, it was a chance to let their work and message speak for itself.

We'll need to reclaim that possibility for everyone. #Academic

Mostly in order to practice the Mastodon interface, I'm going to reproduce one of my posts from the now-defunct Google+ service (on probability paradoxes, first posted Sep 11, 2014) as a thread here. 🧵

We've closed up our Twitter account. A platform whose owner uses it to bait violent anti-democratic conspiracy theories and engage in overt anti-semitism is not a place compatible with our mission to inform, create accountability, and improve democracy.

@Angie_rasmussen

I think those are bots that are reposting your twitter content. But I don't know how to shut them off...

Them: Faving posts on Mastodon is useless, only the OP sees it.

Me, when a post gets faved: awwww, little internet hug ✨

On Twitter, some people are warning that Mastodon server/instance admins can read your DMs. As if this would somehow be worse than Musk and Zuckerberg reading your messages.

More importantly: if Twitter & Facebook have taught us anything, it's that you shouldn't use a *public* social media platform for exchanging *private* messages.

That's what Signal is for.

oh does decentralizing everything not solve all our content moderation problems woops

in 13 years on twitter i’ve never had a post removed, and in 3 weeks on mastodon i’ve already had something taken down for racism and sexism, ok

@freemo It may be good to add this link to the 'message to new users' section of the about page. Just to make sure people aren't caught off guard.

@freemo Just by hosting this instance you are helping lots of people. I greatly appreciate it. I appreciate the open structure of QOTO, even if it's not for everyone, and I think that as Mastodon becomes more mainstream, QOTO will continue to play an important role in the social network. I expect that all instance maintainers/moderators are feeling a lot of stress right now. I'm glad you have other things going for you and can take a step back to see what your goals are and who you are helping. Please take care of yourself and don't burn out!

@ottomate @austinkocher
I think there are a lot of configurations of Twitter that could eek out a living for a decade before finally folding. For instance, tt could end up as content aggregator for passive media consumers combined with a comments section/forum for the GOP base. The site currently has a lot of value to capitalists; even if it loses half of its value, it still has a lot of value.

Texas Observer did it right.

Set up their own instance for staff: not just accounts on other instances.

Welcome to the Fedi:

Alex Stamos, the director of the Stanford Internet Observatory, said it was “odd” that Mr. Musk, who has spent months complaining about Twitter’s problem with bot accounts, would use a Twitter poll in which bots could be voting to decide the issue and then assume that the result “reflects some kind of legitimate ‘voice of the people.’”
“It is definitely possible for small groups to create large numbers of accounts to manipulate features like polls,” he added. #Twitter nytimes.com/2022/11/19/technol

Mastodon Day

Friday November 18, 2022 - An Incredible Day In Internet History

You were here.

It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users an hour. Almost a quarter million migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.

It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.
