@austinkocher "accepted" Ha! The poll was targeted at followers of his account. This account has become the favorite place for MAGA diehards ever since he more-or-less said that he was buying twitter so that he could bring Trump back. Once again, this minority creates the impression that they are a majority simply because they have the support of some rich guy.

When I came over to #mastodon and introduced myself a few weeks ago, a couple of people I didn’t know made me feel very welcome.

To anyone who has just arrived— it’s gonna be ok. We have blankets, hot chocolate, furry animals, and a crackling fire. Make yourself at home.

I was thinking more of the fact that the USA was founded on conquest and slavery. Those attitudes have evolved over time but supremacist attitudes have always remained influential. For instance, after the civil war, the neo-Confederates still ran the Southern states and even spread their attitudes into the north. Even after the civil rights movements of the 1960s, these people only grudgingly conceded that they couldn't be racist in polite company. But it's not just southern racism. There's always been a deep elitism and contempt for people who don't fit into the dominant institutions -- and those attitudes very easily develop into fascism.

Nevada Hospitals warn children could be placed in adult beds

Spike in respiratory cases push NV hospitals to capacity. The association suggests teenagers/children over 110lbs be moved to an adult floor to free up space.

"If you're worried about your child's breathing, one thing you want to do is lift up their shirt to see if they're using extra muscles to breathe. It's usually an indication they're working hard&need to be evaluated."

politics

As the new Congress get organized, remember that Speaker Kevin McCarthy supported Trump's attempt to nullify the election and helped rally angry mobs to keep Trump in power. Remember that many GOP donors initially paused donations under concern that their brands may get damaged by association with an attempted coup; but they resumed donations in time to help the coup plotters gain power in the next election cycle.

@benborges @scubasteve@infosec.exchange @aral The thing is, that authoritarians/racists/fascists have always had a seat at the table in politics and mass media. They may be getting a bit louder or a bit more antagonistic towards the establishment, but they've always been there.

@audrey It's great how these monopolists force the rest of us to cover the cost of enforcing their claims.

One of the weirder prohibitions I've seen on an instance's ToS is "No advertisements or apologia for cryptocurrencies..." (scholar.social/about).

I get that a lot of the cryptocurrency discourse is just hype-mongering and an attempt to create speculative financial bubbles, but there are also people sincerely trying to address real problems. What's more, hype and financial speculation are not limited to cryptocurrencies (e.g. stock picks, metals, college prep). I'm curious how common this prohibition on cryptocurrency discussions is, and whether the moderators have really tried to distinguish between the hype-mongers and those sincerely trying to build a better way of doing things.

Why is there so much #misinformation spread by very popular #influencers?

Well, that is what it takes to reach the top. Influencers who are not bound by #truth can optimize their #content for #engagement, they have more degrees of #freedom to create engaging #information products. 🔽

Thus the most engaging #content online produced by the most successful influencers is almost always #untrue.

@aderfel A note for any US Americans who might be reading -- these resurgences in other countries are no worse than what we are seeing, despite the much higher number of cases and deaths in the USA through most of the pandemic

1) Despite the fact most people wear face coverings in public places in Japan and South Korea, both countries are now experiencing resurgences in #COVID cases and hospitalizations. In this thread, I will try to explain what may be driving the 8th #pandemic waves in those nations.

And here’s a study that looked at Boston area schools that did and did not lift mask requirements. Shocking no one, #masks helped reduce the spread of #covid.

My boss, Matt Mullenweg, the boss of Automattic, owner of Tumblr, is looking for ex-Twitter employees for Tumblr, saying,

"we're putting on a fast track to see how they can help super-charge Tumblr. We can't absorb thousands of people, but I'd be open to hiring entire teams if they already work great together."

He's photomatt on Twitter, or look here too: automattic.com/work-with-us/
