@FailForward @freemo @unamanic Yes. I've been looking forward to this since April.
It's only been a week, but it feels like a month, and yet I am giddy with excitement and laughing rather than wanting the experience to end. In short, watching Twitter die makes me feel like I'm a child again!

@ashedryden Do you have any information on how the collapse of Twitter could affect non-WEIRD people (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic). Are platforms like Mastodon accessible? Are Mastodon instances easier for governments to censor or shutdown (since they don't have to deal with the size and money of Twitter)?

In the late 19th century, the American west was plagued by locust. Then they went extinct. Did the plow do it? (this is a really good, dramatic podcast story)

Wishful thinking from 150 years ago lead to the "dust bowl"...because rain does not follow the plow. But sometimes the plow does change the environment for the better (see next)

A publication in Science proposes that solar and wind energy installations will bring rain to the Sahel and Sahara. This reminds me of the old American idea that "rain follows the plow" (see next)

speculation

1. How will administrators raise revenue? Will this limit the size, reliability, and sustainability of instances? It seems that the developers are adamantly against putting adds in the timeline. Maybe adds could go somewhere on the side (like on a regular website)? Some admins ask for donations, others are trying have a sign-up fee. Are there other models? Will instances need to be provided by existing institutions (schools, activist groups, professional societies)?
2. How will instances resist coordinated attacks? It seems like federation opens some avenues for attacks (as does open registration)...but maybe it's nothing more than for any web server.
3. In the linked article, the author discusses two extremes: "special interest forums" vs "global real time social network. ". What is the middle? I imagine a structured , where each instance is tightly linked to a few others, but most of the network is "over the horizon" and information moves between those instances indirectly. There probably would be some hub instances (perhaps occupied by major media producers). There could also be "protected" instances and "buffer" instances -- where the former emphasizes the complete exclusion of certain people (both internally and in federation), and the later places similar exclusion rules on their own membership, but not on federated instances.

Thoughts? Are there other essays on this?

I'm mulling how the federation could evolve. I found one good article on the topic (medium.com/@lim_nick/mastodon-). A few of my thoughts below...

TL;DR: remove bottom and cap and tower them; compost done in any way possible

@arteteco Thanks!

@arteteco Impressive and intriguing. Can you share a description of what you did? It looks like used water bottles filled with potting soil -- and there must be holes cut in the side. Where do you compost the scraps, and how do you add them?

Seems like my is working... spinach, cabbages, lettuce and 2 tomatoes (just to experiment). The fertility is replenish by kitchen scraps from an increasing amount of neighbors, which I plan to repay in food.

That's just a test, if it works properly I expect my yard walls to be covered by fall =D

I've made a deliberate choice against a quoting feature because it inevitably adds toxicity to people's behaviours. You are tempted to quote when you should be replying, and so you speak at your audience instead of with the person you are talking to. It becomes performative. Even when doing it for "good" like ridiculing awful comments, you are giving awful comments more eyeballs that way. No quote toots. Thank's

@freemo @bnys I guess that shows the power of the framework. Lots of room for innovation, customization, and constructive competition.

@freemo By the way, I really like the page layout at QOTO. Is that your design? If so, nice!

@freemo @bnys The git discussion I posted included a lot of thoughtful comments. Clearly a lot of competent programmers are thinking of how to solve the issue. But until that issue is resolved (and maybe some others), I'll be thinking of this as a pilot test.

@bnys Brendan Nystedt: Thanks for bringing my attention to Mastadon! I like a lot of it...but one essential feature is missing (easy account migration):

@freemo I should take more pictures -- but right now, this is about all I can provide. 😋 I need to go back to the garden and make sure I can identify all the plants!

Let me know if my profile picture is too gruesome. It's just something I found walking around my neighborhood (evidence of a bird of prey).
