@amerika I agree about the monopoly moderator. My point was that there is no reason to fuss about "free speech" on a platform without any monopoly moderator. Free speech is implicit here (aside from the legal restrictions on free speech, which it seems like 'freespeechextremist' has no intent of challenging). Anyway, I looked at the freespeechextremist website some more, and it looks like it's not just an mastodon instance, so maybe the name isn't so obnoxious.

@verita_84 @amerika The current wave of 'free speech' advocates are usually disingenuous opportunists. Even the sincere people can be insufferably naive (as I once was), and I'm not here to engage with them (at least with this account). If I recieve trolling comments from an instance called "LGBTQuberAlles", I'll probably block that instance too.

@schwellenbach I don't. I assume you mean official accounts, not personal ones, right? My understanding is that if they have a lot of regulations on what they can put out if they are presenting themselves as government employees. Given how much content Federal agencies put on Twitter and Facebook, I think they should set up their own Mastodon instances (or some other Fediverse platform) so that anyone can follow their official announcements.

@yes What system are you using (if not Mastodon)? I know that there is inter-operability between Mastodon and other ActivityPub systems, but I don't know if there's any way to tell who is using what.

@feld I think they are saying it's a bad idea for us to try to get up an hour early through the winter. If the USA wants to go to permanent DST, I'll be lobbying all of my local institutions (e.g. schools) to start business hours 30 or even 45 minutes later than they currently do.

@amerika @verita_84 I'm sure there are good people there. But I'm interested in having a good 'signal to noise' ratio here rather than trying to engage with everyone. In my experience, the people who would loudly identify with 'free speech extremism' are not people I feel like engaging with (especially on Mastodon where there is no monopoly moderator)

@yes
It's built in to Mastodon. Click on the triple dots in any message to see the options (at least, it is available in my instance)

@Psy_Fer_ @Amandatron89 @orko @schwellenbach On my instance (qoto), was able to pin hashtag search results to my screen while using the "advanced web interface". I'm guessing that the new 'follow hashtag' feature will cause the hastag to show up in the main feed instead (allowing you to follow multiple hastags easily)

Welp. I blocked my first domain "freespeechextremist". I'm all for free speech -- I consider myself a 'free speech absolutist'. However, I have no patience for idiots who make social media accounts just to see how uncomfortable they can make others feel.

With all the dopamine I get back from quitting the birb site, I managed to publish two blog posts in a week:

1. How I plan to change my usage of social media

popagandhi.com/2022-11-goodbye

2. How I moved to a country I know is terrible but am here anyway

popagandhi.com/2022-11-america

@Amandatron89 @orko @schwellenbach It looks like 'follow hashtags' is a new feature in the v4 release candidate ... so probably not live yet anywhere, right?

We just published this guide at WIRED this morning, for those wanting to build your follow list from your Twitter. #TwitteMigration wired.com/story/how-to-find-tw

Rather amused at progressive pundits / academics who despair at Mastodon's federated (& open source) network, who are finding out for the first time that all social change is also infrastructural change. Yep, one must leave the "platform" to upend platform capitalism

suggestion: hashtags are important here. please use “Camel Case” so screen readers understand what the words are and can pronounce them properly. example:

#DogsOfMastodon not #dogsofmastodon

make sense??

Hi all, brand new here, but excited to see what's going on! I'm an ecologist and conservation scientist at the University of York. I'm expecting to share occasional thoughts about conservation, hopefully more often supplemented with gratuitous picture of birds - here's a sleepy African Scops Owl to start with.

A few #journals and preprint servers are slowly showing up. Here a few.

@unamanic @freemo I never felt very comfortable participating in Twitter. I read it, because some people produced good content, but I didn't want to contribute to it because overall it seemed anti-social.
