#ObliqueStrategies is Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt's deck of 100+ cards, each with a sentence of gnomic advice. They inspired Roxy Music, David Bowie, Talking Heads and Devo. My favorite? "Be the first person to not do something that no one else has ever not done before."

@feld I wouldn't assume that just because a centralized system could be more energy efficient that it actually is. Energy efficiency is not necessarily what they were putting their effort towards. For one thing, Twitter puts a lot of effort towards maximizing profit, so that is its own form of overhead cost and energy usage.
THIS ➡️ is the smartest discussion you'll find about @Mastodon, the Fediverse, Activity Hub, decentralized social networks, and the future of content moderation.

@tklebel I've seen three new serves catering to biologists that have each picked up about 1000 users so far. Plus many other new users on older science-themed instances (like mine, qoto.org)
We've all been waiting for it, and here it is: A search function that will yield results from all Mastodon instances: https://fedsearch.io/?q=%22European+Space+Agency%22 \o/

Empathy in nonhumans.
Caroline Driscoll and I are doing experimental work on the evolution of empathy in rats.
I never tire of telling people that in his 1890 pamphlet "Anarchist morality" Peter Kropotkin (he of "Mutual Aid" fame) suggested nonhumans displayed empathy.
What spurred him to write his 1890 pamphlet was Kropotkin's reading of Adam's Smith's 1759 book, "The Theory of Moral Sentiments."
Yay, congrats @suryamattu and @mynameisfiber for the launch of the Digital Witness Lab! @e_urq I think my instance proviwes quote-toots. Does it look like a QT to you?
Read this thread and then uninstall the native Twitter app and remove any sort of location permissions when requested (or use Firefox since its privacy angles are more in favor of people). https://twitter.com/stevekrenzel/status/1589700721121058817, archived for simpler reading at https://archive.ph/EKLCB (https://jacky.wtf/2022/11/fp3M)
Ballistic ejecta are solid (called blocks) or more fluid (called bombs) rock that is shot out of a #volcano at high-speed. There is a myth that you can just watch where they are going and dodge them, but the reality is that there is often far too many to dodge. These can be quite small, or the size of a fridge-sized refrigerator.
Bonus points if you get the reference.

@undefined @e_urq I agree. I'd use quote-tweets just to pass along a message while adding a little more context for my audience. That's normally how I've seen them used. If someone wants to be nasty to the original author, they normally use a screenshot rather than QT.
@amerika @p 'pistolero' - thanks for sharing your thoughts and working on revolver. I agree that the ideal 'social media' would fully empower individuals to decide who they want to interact with and how. 'amerika' - you forced me to unblock the site so that I could hear from pistolero! Anyway, on the topic of Overton Window, I don't think we maximize our exposure to useful concepts by receiving a unfiltered flow of speech. Much (most?) speech is either social posturing or lies. It does not introduce me to new ideas -- it just wastes my time that I could be using to engage with new ideas. People need to be deliberate about how they gather information -- seeking a balance between open exploration and having a system to filter out the noise. I personally tend to alternate between periods of exploring new ideas and periods of more concentrated engagement with the ideas I've already found.
@verita_84 @amerika Definitely. You went straight to "I hate the fags" in a conversation about free speech and blocking instances. You're just wasting my time.
@verita_84 @amerika. Going off like that about people you hate will get you blocked/ostracized -- both online and in real life -- and it will be your own damn fault.
