@DrJLCatlett Generally. I did the joke, translated and i think it works better in english. Not thinking about contents here, just about feels.

@admitsWrongIfProven

It works both ways for me. Of course, I’m mentally translating the German, so I might miss nuance.

@DrJLCatlett I got no hint of you speaking german, so please explain: why/how do you speak this useless, exotic language? Reviewing the posts now, to see if a more rational approach might be explainable.

@admitsWrongIfProven

I don’t post in German much. I read and understand spoken German fairly well and speak conversational German well enough to get by in person. I struggle to write in German because my grammar is atrocious. I’m working on it though.

As to why I learned German, some of my ancestors were German, Danish and Dutch, and German was one of the languages taught in my school. I thought it would be nice connection to my family, and I spent a year in Germany after graduation.

Learning German has helped me learn other languages. It is better than my French or Spanish, but I may never have learned those if I hadn’t learned German first.

And quite frankly, learning other languages by knowing this and that, that has always been bullshit to me. It never worked. At least for me.
And yeah, i do think english can be dismissive easier than other languages ;-)

Macht es dir deine Familie schwer, Kontakt zu halten oder geht es nur um eine nette Geste?

I think it is easier to learn more languages if you already speak more than one. I don’t know about learning from “this or that” but the act of switching between languages is a practiced skill.
I certainly notice when I haven’t been practicing switching languages enough, and I use some of the same mental practices when speaking or listening to Spanish, French and Chinese (please don’t ask me to write in those languages! German is hard enough!)

@DrJLCatlett Haha, it certainly is.
Learning more if you know more... yeah, that, maybe. It seems more like "if you do well, you will do better". Mean thoughts about inequality come in, and since i delayed sleeping for so long, i think i might just sleep now.
Sleep well, whenever that is for you.
I would welcome more talk tomorrow, but the ghost of work coming is pulling me away ^^
