Tonight’s moon rising with clouds

Initial impression of Mastodon…

Isn't it kinda weird that #Mastodon gets described as 'left-leaning' because we handle more strickt rules and don't tolerate things like bullying.. It could be me but I perceive this as 'normal'.

I mean you don't call people all kinds of names in a conversation on the street or in the store right? Even if you don't agree🤔

Somehow it feels the (online) standards for treating each other have declined so much over the past few years

Let them talk, we are a loving and happy community!

#Mastodon is not the only software that makes up the #Fediverse!

There is a whole lot more, for example #Pixelfed, #Misskey, #Pleroma, #PeerTube and so much more.

You can more about it:
https://fedidb.org/software

You can also follow those accounts from Mastodon, for example here are some of mine:

Misskey: @io
Pixelfed: @stux@pixey.org
@George
@Washy

Under trees replace the grass monoculture with bark mulch, dead wood and wild woodland flowers. This habitat supports a wide range of flora and fauna including these beauties. #Biodiversity #ClimateAction

This looks interesting for people who use #LaTeX, #Overleaf or work in sciences

I don't work for overleaf I just use the platform, and really recommend it.

A relevant blog post for this Mastodon platform: 'The "palaeontological folklore" of mastodon hair': an essay about the surprising LACK of fossil evidence for brown, shaggy hair in these elephant-like creatures. It turns out that there's no reason to assume mastodons were mammoth-like in appearance, and the brown, hairy mastodons you see everywhere are a #paleoart super-meme.

The machinery that make #mitochondria the POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL™️ is found on the inner mito membrane. These membranes are folded up into structures called #cristae that increase the surface area of the membrane (to make more ATP).

Where did cristae come from? How common are they in #bacteria?

Here is a beautiful new paper from Victoria Orphan et al. showing that alphas are not the only bacteria that can make cristae. Check out these cristae in #Desulfovibrio (!)

@Herring1967 I found this explanation very useful when I got here a few days ago.

I wish I could remember who boosted it, so I could thank them again.

A reminder for anyone new to mastodon who might not be happy with some of the racist and bad actors out there on other servers... Just import the fediblock list to your personal blocks and you will be safe from the vast majority of bad actors.

This is probably obvious to many, but one way I've been building my feed in the #fediverse outside of my #instance is specifically exploring other instances that are thematically interesting; for the most part, if you go to [instance name]/explore you can browse an instance similarly to how #local works.
