My daughter: "Everyone's so amazed that every snowflake's different, but no one cares that every potato is different."

Almost got scammed selling some stuff online. 🤙

Had a person send me their number as an interested buyer and told me to text them. I did (first mistake), and we arranged a meetup time. Then they asked if, for their safety, they could send me a six digit code (some of you already know where this is going) that I could repeat back to them to verify myself.

I said, "absolutely!" And sure enough, I got a Google Voice verification number. lol

If you're not familiar with the scam, shady people will take your phone number and try to create a Google Voice account with it. If you provide them with the 6-digit code that Google sends you, they can "verify" that they are you, and then basically use your phone number to run scams, commit fraud, etc. It's nasty business.

I called them out, blocked them, then reported them to the marketplace website and to the FTC--though, almost certainly, they were using the phone number of another poor soul to carry this out.

I used to work as a social engineer, running phishing campaigns (ethically, with consent lol), against Fortune 1000 companies to assess their level of vulnerability. Luckily for me, I was super familiar with this, but most of the people I told about it have said, "Oh, I probably would have fallen for that...."

So that is why I'm posting this. Please be aware of sketchy shit like this. If someone is asking you for a verification code over SMS or email, tread with EXTREME caution.

Stay safe out there, kids.

Now that Business Success with Open Source is in beta and available for purchase in early release, I have the mental space available to start considering my next steps. The first one of those steps: find my next job.

What I'm looking for:

It's the start of #EarlyVoting oting in #Texas, and as usual for off-years, we've got a bevy of constitutional amendments to vote on. I like the endorsements at the Austin Chronicle (austinchronicle.com/news/2023-) and Progress Texas (progresstexas.org/2023-texas-s)

Poll: How frequently do you apply security patches and software updates to your #Linux, #Unix, or #FreeBSD server or desktop? Please boost for reach. TIA. 🙏

Is there a way to create a five minute news show in five minutes? Well, not quite, but we're certainly getting there.

Andy Giefer, HLT/NLProc aficionado and our team's tech lead, has put together a piece of software that aims to experiment with the automation of web radio – and already shows very promising results.

In this post, we take a look at how the prototype application works, and what kind of benefits and risks it brings.

Holy shit I think I’m in love.

#Protomaps, a way to serve vector #maps of the entire world using a single static file and HTTP range requests.

It’s basically a static site generator for interactive maps. Tile servers are pretty much obsolete now. No database needed, you can run your interactive, smooth-zooming vector map from any HTTP storage. S3, Caddy running on your Wi-Fi router, even GitHub pages.

It’s open source & free to use. Wow. 🤯

Depression, anxiety

@funkatron I hope you are doing better today.

This was taken at 21:35 last night (21st Oct) during astronomical twilight from Hoopers Inlet. Sony A7S2 camera with canon 16-35mm f/2.8 lens ISO 3200. Some nice colur from the twilight and the sunlight still illuminating the high beams making them look lovely! #astronomy #NewZealand #aurora #auroraaustralis

From my archive: a fun class I taught to my students to get them excited about #hamradio (my #amateurradio mobile kit in the box, and I'd have the girls spell out their names in NATO phonetics to make contact as third party traffic to a volunteer or really anyone we could contact, was always a blast).

Was great having Francie from Out of Spec Podcast guest hosting with us today.
Also, was reminded of the perils of doing it live at the top of the show. A little embarrassing, but had a good laugh about it later.

I miss this car. I don't get it.

The EUV was terrible and my heart refuses to be won over by the OG Bolt. This thing was the right amount of everything in maybe a not-so spriteful manner. It was quite close to my late Fiat... a version of it that grew up a bit maybe, works a little too much overtime and put on a bit too much weight, requires coffee in the morning and can't really stay out late tearing up the dancefloor, er I mean curves, at midnight anymore.

But it was still lovely.

If my Volt didn't have the trade in value of 3 expired Hostess cakes I'd be quite inclined to visit the local dealer and grab one before GM turns the new variant into an over-bloated SUV that only the top 10% can afford.
