Elon Musk’s reach on Twitter is dropping — he just fired a top engineer over it - https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/9/23593099/elon-musk-twitter-fires-engineer-declining-reach-ftc-concerns

So, since JoinMastodon.org has decided to change the way servers are listed on their website — showing preference for large servers who do not have a manual review process to join —>

May I ask that you help us spread the word that people can join us at https://mstdn.games ?

We’re an all-inclusive #gaming community and our Local feed is amazing — absolutely the go-to place for all things #Games. Our Mods are top tier.

This is how much the tectonic plates shifted during the Turkey earthquake, the entire road moved. This photo was taken by Prof. Hasan Sozbilir leader of the ATAG research group currently mapping the surface ruptures. #TurkeySyriaEarthquake #TectonicPlates

We will announce two PhD positions in mid-Feb through the Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics. Both projects concern manipulating proteins using strong electric fields and will be hosted by the Biochemistry programme at my dept and the Dept of Physics.

Now, we need good candidates with a good biophysics background (loosely defined). Please get in touch if you want to know more and please make potential candidates aware of the opportunity.

You are #NewHere or not so new and still finding your way, here are some #GettingStartedTips

- please post an #introduction so people can notice you and boost you
- put some information in your bio including hashtags so people know why they should follow you
- start following people. You need about 100 to make your feed interesting. You can always unfollow people later if you don't enjoy their posts.
- post whatever is on your mind or in your heart. I am happy to read more from you!

Most of the #education people I know on here do higher ed.

That's good, but I'd like to follow more #K12 #educators.

With the last new-user-wave settling in, who are some of my fellow #teachers on here who work with K-12 students?

Heyyyy everyone. My work is looking to hire a dev-ops engineer in the west michigan area and a WFH-flexible location network team supervisor. Either of these you? Shoot me a message here. #shouldIHashtagThis #probably #butWhat🤔

Toot v19.0 has been released!

https://toot.to/

This one was a longer development period than usual! I decided to do some heavy internal rewrites (moving to Swift async/await, for those who care about technical details), and since that was likely to cause some new bugs, I did a round of public beta testing. Thank you to everyone who participated, I managed to fix at least some of those bugs!

What's new in this release is mainly notification folding, which combines similar notifications.

Today we've released a new update to our iOS app! It brings an improved sign-up flow, home screen widgets, and many accessibility improvements.

I keep seeing articles about Mastodon slumps, and journalists going back to Twitter. Is it fair to say, that maybe Mastodon isn't for journalists, or brands, or even people who want large accounts? Maybe Mastodon is true social media, for people who want to interact and discuss, not be influenced, sold to, or manipulated with cult style tactics and followings. There will always be groups who dislike the idea of the people controlling their own inputs, people who don't like the idea of accessible Administration, and people who don't like the idea that if we don't like a space that we can just move to another one, or even create our own. Individualism is scary to the kind of people who thrive on complacency, and not challenging the status quo.

I love everything about this. #electricvehicles https://insideevs.com/news/651388/renault-4-le-car-ev-retrofit-conversion-kit/

Same energy. #SOTU

Mastodon seems to have a whole lot less drama and very thoughtful users.
Boost if you’re happy here and reply to boost your own account. 💙

The ostensible promise of technology is that it would liberate humanity from the drudgery of menial work, enabling us to engage with more meaningful and creative pursuits.

Instead, we have frenzied development of ML systems to centralize and replace writing, art and other meaningful creative pursuits, giving us more time for menial work.

This seems pretty contrary to any useful definition of progress.

We are looking for some technical product managers and product owners interested in public interest cybersecurity. DM me up for more info. Thanks! phil

What would you say is your personal #1 perk of working remotely?

I am looking for non-male (female, non-binary, etc) software engineers who would be willing to record a short (30-seconds) video about why ethics is important in their professional practice. It's for our first-year Computer Science students. If you would like to help, get in touch with me here. Thank you! :)

I know that there's been intermittent stability issues with mastodon.social and mastodon.online recently. We're working on improving our infrastructure to address this.
