a thing of beauty

New post: I read a really great book recently, "Naming Things", that explains why picking the right abstractions in development is so hard.

The book goes into explaining what makes good names (variables, classes, etc.) good and heuristics for picking them.

Please keep an eye out if you see these bikes. They were stolen from my garage last week. The Rivendell is very distinct and one of a kind, should be easy to spot.

Found something remarkable (and also quite sad).

In 1997, Wired published "The Long Boom", a hyper-optimistic article about how we'd achieve Utopia by 2020.

The authors included notes on some "scenario spoilers"—negative events that might send is in a worse direction.

...and those spoilers turned out to be almost spookily accurate.

OG Apple fans, here’s an amazing rabbit hole for you, @MattJFullerTech ’s massive old school Apple collection.

I’ve included a few pics below, but follow this link and dive in. These are just the tip of the iceberg.

Open, shared software is the opposite of machine learning.

Bear with me on this, but start here:

I've had this experience, of some seemingly-trivial niche little utility I've written and shared, of somebody I will never meet appearing in my inbox asking, I just found this, does this really [do X]?"

To which I answered, yes, and got the reply "oh thank god".

So, somebody found the solution to a difficult problem they had, and that problem just... vanished.

This may be a stretch, but the internets are a big place....

We've got a Skillshot FX massive cabinet pinball thingy, and it runs Pinball FX3 from the factory. With the new Pinball FX coming out (which has some incredible tables that we only have on our other virtual pinball cabinet that isn't quite as nice), anyone installed Pinball FX for those other new tables? Looking for directions, can it be done at all, whether it's a good idea, etc.....?

Welcome, Stitcher users!

I started Overcast ten years ago in large part because I was afraid of Stitcher taking over the market with its proprietary walled garden (which was even more walled at the time, and was gaining significant traction).

I wanted to ensure that the open world of podcasting survived and thrived, even when faced with strong proprietary threats.

The names and players have changed since then, and the battle continues, but open podcasting remains dominant and healthy today.

Dear Masto and Lurk Congregation: A friend in New York is asking for help to digitize a Floppy CF2 (not a 5/25 floppy). Do you now somebody? RT please, she is a very nice graphic designer working with typographic archives.

Just got laid off. 😞

If anyone knows of any senior iOS positions that are open to remote, I’d appreciate knowing.

Thanks

Fixing the line of code: 10 seconds.

Knowing which line of code to fix: A decade of experience.

Realising that's not the right line to fix: 4 hours.

Knowing which line of code to actually fix: 4 more hours.

Fixing the actual line which needed fixing: 10 seconds.

And #Fedifinder is back. The API wasn't turned off for good, but they removed my app from my project and as a result I lost access to v2.

Find your friends from Twitter in the fediverse and download a copy of their profiles to find them after deleting your Twitter account: https://fedifinder.glitch.me/

Can you help?

I am considering finding an #ADHD “coach“ or other type of person who can help me work through my day and establish better routines. I’d appreciate someone who has experience working with software dev types.

I need a person, not a book or videos. It can be remote tho.

Recommendations?
