“You, boy, what social media website am I posting from?”

Making my #introduction as part of the #TwitterMigration. I live in rural Northern California and work in #SoftwareDevelopment for #RenewableEnergy projects. I am working on my master’s degree in #Library and #InformationScience #MLIS. I love #reading #books of all kinds and dabble in #writing. I also devote a lot of time to #gardening #baking and #baseball. I have three bossy #cats and one very opinionated #dog and love #wildlife and animals of all kinds.

"Forever Chemicals" don't have to last forever—a heat- and pressure-based technique known as supercritical water oxidation destroyed 99 percent of the PFASs present in a water sample. scientificamerican.com/article by @Fischblog

Aloha, infosec folks and everyone like me trying to understand what on earth some of these Extremely Clever People (TM) are talking about.

IRL I'm a dad and husband, struggle to function without coffee, read all manner of stuff and think that the BBC In Our Time podcast may be the single greatest piece of broadcasting every created. If you haven't already, check it out. There is, quite literally, something for everyone.

Professionally, I'm an IT contractor who has been tinkering with, breaking and - more usually - fixing all manner of IT things for nearly thirty years. I started out as a tech for a PC retailer in the 90s and, through a combination of blind luck, the right friends and a modicum of talent, somehow ended up being the guy people come and talk to to get a steer on how to do things where I currently work.

Bloody hell. Almost thirty years...

For most of the last 20 years or so I've been an AD guy, a Vmware guy, a 3PAR guy, a general-Windows-Adminy-Stuff guy, a quite-interested-in-infosec guy and a dabbles-in-Linux-a-bit guy. I can cobble together scripts, but I am #notacoder. I seem to end up fielding a lot of questions that come my way because someone told someone else "oh, he might know..." This is an entirely undeserved reputation.

PSA: we are still operating here on Mastodon, as you may have seen we are also on Threads.

This is the best post I’ve ever read on tech debt (and I wish I had written it) apenwarr.ca/log/?m=202306

The contact information for the REI board of directors is board@rei.com

If you're an REI member who's not a fan of union busting, please let them know that when next year's board of director elections are happening, you'll be voting accordingly.

(Also, please boost)

Mastodon went from 1.2M active users last week to 1.8M active users this week. That's not 70M users overnight, but it's something! 🙂

Here's a link to the article GQ pulled because the rich dude who was the subject of said article complained.

I just finished my last hour in the role I've had for the last 15 months.

I'm a largely back-end Perlish web guy who has spent some time working vaguely in React. If you need a dev, I'm open.

Ever wonder how #JWST images go from raw telescope data to the beautiful press release images you on social media?

Check out this video series from @spacetelescope. I was on the team that put these together.

In this first video, we show you what the raw data looks like and how you can download it yourself.

Learn more about the process here: webbtelescope.org/contents/art

An American journalist friend is stationed in east Asia for a few months. His laptop died, which turned out to be the accidental linchpin to his 2FA access to…everything? (His US phone is in the states.) Google bafflingly refuses to send a recovery code to his recovery email address, leaving him locked out of his entire life.

Could anybody at Google help him get back into his account, if only by triggering the recovery email to be sent?

I have barely any followers so if you see this please boost it. But anyways, now that meta released threads, are you gonna use it?

Got laid off last week

My most recent position was as a staff engineer working on an iOS healthcare application that provides users with health and wellness coaching. The new features I worked on this year were all SwiftUI, and I'm eager to continue that path.

- 15 years iOS development
- 25 years macOS dev
- looking for US-remote, no sponsorship
