Whoa. Sophos researchers just announced that they’ve uncovered 133 malicious drivers signed with legitimate digital certificates, and found 100 of of those 133 drivers were signed by Microsoft.
From the post:
"Today, Microsoft issued Security Advisory ADV230001 as part of their July Windows Update that addresses Sophos’ discovery of more than 100 malicious drivers that had been digitally signed by Microsoft and others, dating as far back as April 2021."
"They also released Knowledge Base article 5029033, which includes new, more detailed information on the technical measures Microsoft has taken to protect against these malicious signed drivers. Sophos has had protection measures in place since 2022 that could detect the presence of, and block the installation of, these drivers."

I quit my job last week, and for the first time ever, I don’t have anything else lined up.
So: Do you know someone who needs a senior-level jack-of-all-trades coder and sysadmin? Who can also write well? And has thirty years of experience delivering robust, high-quality products quickly? In Los Angeles or remote? Send ‘em to greg@eod.com!
Please don’t make me have to use LinkedIn. Please.

A very in-depth post about waterproofing electronics based on years of real-world outdoor and underwater deployments.

Business Insider wrote about “fake work” at tech companies. Sadly, what I’ve experienced is more of the empire building variety and getting caught in the crossfire of teams fighting for scope, and not so much of the mythical “rest and vest”
Kudos to Sarah Silverman! This will most likely become a landmark case.

I sincerely hope Threads follows through with their plan to federate. It will give other Fediverse users a controlled pipeline to the zeitgeist.
By judiciously following Threaders here we’ll be able to have safe access to the people, news, and brands we could never convince to use Mastodon without having to submerse ourselves into the massive, undifferentiated flood of info over there.
This is a good thing, yes?
Finally, a night in my observatory in Central Texas under clear skies! After a new polar alignment, I quickly captured some data on the M27 nebula before the Moon rose.

Now that I'm giving @nextcloud@mastodon.xyz a try, I didn't expect the platform to be THIS delightful and simple to use.
Why aren't official institutions using this already?

I decided it was finally time to move all my photos off of iCloud and onto my home server, so I could stop paying for iCloud storage. Only problem is that Apple makes this extremely difficult to do.
Google has a convenient Takeout page, that will give you a zip of all your data from any of their services. Apple has no such thing for Photos. They recommend using command A and export on a Mac in the Photos app, but this of course doesn't work for thousands of items.
I recently read a long thread on mastodon about several small, easy to implement self-care and self-soothing techniques the author said worked well for them. One of the earliest techniques described was simply.. going on a walk outside while quietly verbalizing everything you are thinking internally in your mind grapes 🧠. I was like, how can this possibly work? I wasn't sure about it. Then I finally got around to remembering the technique while on a walk, said "Why not give it a shot?" then tried it.. and holy cow! It did seem to work. 🎉 I wasn't sure about the advice and didn't like/bookmark it at the time I read it, so I can't find the thread. I was wondering if anyone remembered seeing a thread like this somewhere?
