Anybody know if the Mastodon protocol/project has any plans to add toot translation support?

I'm struggling to see how it would work with the decentralised nature - easy to see how individual apps/clients may support translation, but I can't mandate which one my followers use.

Presumably if the centralised protocol adopts it, it'll need translation services (Google/MS etc) to agree to offer that integration free of charge. I can see that end users could be offered a selection of services.

@illtud - embedded translation is so important and useful to me. Having grown up in a ruthlessly monolingual world & given my own cognitive style, I have never succeeded at learning any language other than English. My network of mentors & collaborators are mostly EU based. Twitter in-line translation has been vital for me. I hope a solution can be developed for Mastodon client apps.

@Jim_Salmons thanks Jim - it's a real blocker for me here, most of my followers aren't Welsh speakers, and when Twitter translate arrived (and the translation improved quite quickly) it meant that I suddenly didn't have to worry about my language choice. With Welsh->English translation APIs becoming ubiquitous and free (though possibly not for app developers), I hope that clients will manage to incorporate it, or server-side services will be developed.
