Staying on twitter because you need the income is an extremely poor long term plan because it will only continue worsening over time

The longer you wait to build a community elsewhere the harder it'll be when you finally have to because twitter can no longer sustain you

"Oh well thats easy for you to say you have 5000 followers on mastodon"

1. Yes because I took my own advice and aggressively invested in other places immediately when the writing for twitter was on the wall

2. I had two and a half times that amount of followers on twitter, AND I'm poor enough that we couldn't run heat all winter, AND I was still on the tail end of a nervous breakdown when I moved here. It was not "easy", but it was necessary, so I did it, because that's how it is on this bitch of an earth

@eniko unfortunately, for some people, they literally don't have a choice. I'm talking about sex workers. Twitter is literally the only platform where sex workers are allowed to exist. (thanks FOSTA!) Sex workers tried to have their own mastodon instance, and eventually had to shut down because of anti-sex work legislation. This, unfortunately, is not a problem that can be solved by technology--it can only be solved by policy (namely, ending discrimination of sex workers. )
