Yesterday, Ohio sent to the Senate a religious zealot who is calling for an “outright ban” on adult content (i.e., going back to jailing people for having sex on camera):

Introduction:

I am a forensic psychologist and researcher and mostly post about sexuality science, child sexual abuse prevention, and forensic mental health. With occasional posts about fishing and food!

@evangreer I didn't even know there was a COPPA 2.0. And personally I think KOSA is terrible, not just 'bad'

✍️Evan's post-election tech policy legislation cliff notes:

AICOA is a good bill

OAMA is a good bill

ADPPA is an okay bill and i'd be happy if it passed

COPPA 2.0 is a not great bill but i can live with it

KOSA is a bad bill

JCPA is a bad bill

EARN IT is a terrible bill

Loved the bird app for a long time but the recent chaos and ongoing problem of trolls…

Trying Mastodon as an alternative space for discourse about sexuality science, child sexual abuse prevention, and forensic mental health. With fewer posts about fishing and food.

@jilliancyork I've used third-party mastodon apps (tusky, fedilab, and twidere) and the official mastodon app. Gonna be honest the official app is actually not bad. I haven't tried the PWA

Some people think Mastodon is too weird to become popular:

I joined Twitter in 2008. We had to put a "d" in front of a tweet to convert it to a direct message and every other day you had some embarrassing private moments exposed because someone forgot about the “d”. Hashtags were just a community hack, introduced by Chris Messina to somehow tag content. Search? Hah, you wish! Tweets via SMS were supposed to be a thing. Oh, and the daily meet and greet with the failwhale. Totally not weird.

I saw that it was Aaron Swartz’ 36th birthday, and looked back at what I wrote about his case, and his suicide, almost ten years ago.

It all holds up, but it’s kind of darkly amusing to figure out that when I was writing this about how well people mask their depression I was profoundly depressed and nobody knew. So, QED, I guess?

The #election results will have a huge impact on do or die tech policy fights like data privacy, online access to abortion information and fundraising, surveillance, antitrust, and Big Tech accountability. My org @team is hosting a panel / Q&A this Friday to discuss with experts including folks from @glaad @amnestyusa @eff @protonmail and more. us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regist

This is a really interesting interface that makes mastodon look like the more familiar Twitter interface fe.soapbox.pub/

Mastodon is now at 1 million users … same as Twitter was in 2008 when I joined (as @james_slezak@twitter.com )

RT evan_greer: 🧵Okay it's #ElectionDay (go vote! voting is a valid harm reduction strategy.)

I know this birdsite is going to hell in a handbasket, but while we're all still here, I put together a THREAD on what the midterms will likely mean for tech policy fights that impact human rights.

@session he founded Thorn, an anti sex work and anti porn organization that pretends to be a child protection organization.

I hate people like him.
