About a month ago someone asked when Mastodon would start to feel “live” like Twitter does on good days. I said, “the first big news event” and turns out that was not elections or World Cup but bannings that has brought us all together tonight.

That he sees Mastodon as a threat is absolutely fascinating.

I'm here watching all of the accounts get banned on twitter. I worry that a lot of the big trans accounts that criticize Musk and LOTT will be next. I know a number of us have been at odds with Musk orbiters.

It is a genuinely sad thing that someone so obviously unsuited to the responsibility has so much power over public discourse online. Twitter had lots of problems, but Musk seems intent on destroying it altogether, and as quickly as possible.

Such absolute petulance. You can't tweet Mastodon links anymore (like, to tell people where you're going) because Twitter has determined they are "harmful."

So the #birdsite is now officially blocking all links to #mastodon presumably over @elonjet

So, hey, unlike when there were (more reasonable!) suspensions under the old regime, I don't see anyone whining about "my first amendment rights!" and "Congress needs to do something!" after tonight's bans.

Perhaps (hopefully?) because everyone here recognizes how free speech actually works?

There is no evidence whatsoever that any of these journalists harmed Musk in any way.

Seeing some concern that instances will close registrations due to the increase in new users.

At this time the network is running well, and almost all major servers are accepting new accounts.

Talking to former Twitter trust & safety folks... and they note that *normally* under existing policy, accounts are supposed to get strikes for violating policy, not be immediately permabanned.

Remember how Elon said no content moderation policies have changed?

Well, I'd say... that's changed.

Ironically, the Great Banning is the first time that Mastodon has felt like it's fulfilling the role for me that Twitter once did—a place to keep up-to-date on a fast-moving event, where everyone is talking about the same thing

Protocols, not platforms. That we let ourselves get suckered into platforms over protocols is one of the biggest unforced errors in the history of the net, and if Musk makes that widely obvious, it will be a significant silver lining in his sophomoric conflagration.
