I'm going to jump off @mmasnick post here concerning @onthemedia going well out of its way to condemn Mastodon as a failure in this week's episode. I've been a fan of OTM for years, but this is a surprisingly short-sighted take from a program that USUALLY gets it.
This place is ONLY a failure if your overwhelming motivation is passive and unthinking eyeballs.
But this represents a false metric.
If you consider the engagement ratio on Twitter compared to here, the Fediverse is clearly more successful -- in that you'll have a HIGHER percentage of ACTIVE users ENGAGING with your posts. Hell, even an obscure creative weirdo like me has been surprised by how TIGHTER the bonds are here and how much GREATER the level of engagement is.
On the Media obviously has to answer to WNYC. And big numbers -- meaning a total representing active and INACTIVE -- is the false metric. Media orgs need to readjust the numbers on what qualifies as success.
🎊🍾🥳 MASTODON JUST REACHED 11 MILLION REGISTERED ACCOUNTS!!! 🥳🍾🎊

The number of children and teens killed by gunfire in the United States increased 50% between 2019 and 2021. FIFTY PERCENT. IN TWO YEARS. I keep pretty close tabs on these statistics and I had no idea it was that bad. #gunviolence #publichealth

@eniko unfortunately, for some people, they literally don't have a choice. I'm talking about sex workers. Twitter is literally the only platform where sex workers are allowed to exist. (thanks FOSTA!) Sex workers tried to have their own mastodon instance, and eventually had to shut down because of anti-sex work legislation. This, unfortunately, is not a problem that can be solved by technology--it can only be solved by policy (namely, ending discrimination of sex workers. #SexWorkerRightsAreHumanRights)
