Use and Follow #hashtags !!!

Mastodon has no ads, 500 chars, 5 pins, and edits, but the best thing is NO ALGORITHM. On the birdsite you are force-fed by an algorithm. A mishmash of your history, likes, follows and whatever Twitter wants to cram into you. With NO ALGORITHM, you are in control. Your feeds are just who and what you follow, and you can follow #hashtags .

Include #hashtags liberally so others can follow your ideas.

Someone just mentioned the differences between #Twitter and #Google regarding user data. Yes, indeed.

I've worked inside #Google twice. Their explicit rules, approvals, logging and "need to know" requirements for access to user data are most impressive. Anyone even attempting to access user data inappropriately is fired and marched out the door by security. This is part of why I have a great deal of trust in Google, and consider Elon's #Twitter to be utterly untrustworthy and totally beneath contempt.

@micahflee That's exactly what I did. Twitter became a habit, a deep one. Mastodon isn't a habit yet. I really, REALLY love the vibe here. I don't want to support fascism and bigotry. I want to quit Twitter, but it's a deep connection / habit / likely addiction. I have work to do to sort it out, honestly.

The fact that we all came to #mastadon looking for an app just lke Twitter and 2 days later we are all happy that Mastodon is in fact NOT like Twitter, says a lot about that little birdie.

1. fascists hate any effort to limit or reduce abuse or violence, and
2. speaking against abuse means you're going to be speaking about difficult and stigmatized issues, which makes you a target.
