This article on what the author calls the "antiviral" design of Mastodon is a good explanation of why Mastodon feels different from Twitter, and why, if you're looking for a 1:1 Twitter replacement, Mastodon might not be what you're looking for.

@taylorlorenz I had a discussion about this before. Disabled people were asked to put disability topics under a CW which got me outrageous.
Then there was a suggestion disabled people should join one instance and make it CW by default not understanding the main problem that disability is not and should not be CW.

RT @iproposethis: 'No Nut November' is a great opportunity to talk to your kids about sex.

If they're over 12 and on social media, they've heard of it.

Start the convo: "I heard it's 'No Nut November' and it got me thinking about..."

Your child will groan and roll their eyes, but...

RT @WoodhullFreedom: This week is ! It is a time to honor, celebrate, and uplift the trans community. With anti-trans rhetoric and legislation at all-time highs, now more than ever, we need to listen to the trans community about their experiences. t.co/JBAXmvUq6u

hi \@elonmusk just checking on this. any update on when Twitter will encrypt DMs? free speech advocates around the world would like to know...

QT elonmusk: Twitter DMs should have end to end encryption like Signal, so no one can spy on or hack your messages

With the way things are, Twitter might not have any security people on staff soon. If you're using "login with Twitter" as a Single Sign-On (SSO) solution for some websites/services, I'd be worried if I were you. If you can switch to a different authentication method then do it and purge the authentication tokens/sessions.

"They believe the trolls were not motivated by genuine concerns about survivors or potential survivors, or by concerns about safeguarding as has been claimed, because many simply phoned up, shouted “paedophile”, and made transphobic, homophobic and racist remarks." t.co/JrTVPdjg0G

If you think we can relax now because democracy survived the midterms, then you’re not paying attention.

Musk’s takeover of Twitter is essentially a social media Brexit: much promised, nothing or just chaos delivered, no one happy, and those who opposed left trying to find their place in new and confusing world.

I keep being delighted, over and over, by how much the fediverse feels like the early days of the bird site in so many good ways ❤️ #meta

Consistently impressed by design decisions by Mastodon devs. Sure, there’s some usability rough edges compared to the bird site. But on balance the reasons for the general vibe here are clearly intentional decisions, not an accident. 🙏🏻

Encryption rules. 💪

Agreed. The back story is long and crazy. But in short the LGBTQ and others in the community at the time were being mass banned simply for following bad actors, even when they didnt boost, promote, or in any way show sympathetic leaning towards those bad actors.

The reason they were following them was to watch their account for violent threats and then disseminate that throughout their community for safety. But many instance admins didnt care and blocked/banned anyway.

As a result the LGBTQ community in masse migrated here for their safety.

We added a feature for them called subscribe. It lets you follow a person without them knowing you are following them. BUT it only lets you access the posts that person gives you permission to view (basically public posts, you cant see follower-only posts on a subscription). We did this so members of our community could follow these bad actors without alerting them and putting themselves at risk of violence or retaliation.

People again twisted this feature into being privacy violating despite the fact that it honors the privacy rules set by the poster.

Needless to say a lot of people were very mad that their blocking and banning abuses were coming back to bite them in the ass and ultimately distorted and lied the truth about QOTO and our feature to try to make it sound like something evil when it wasnt... those lies persist to this day.
