Elon Bird site Sad

So childish. No, that's unfair to children.

How long, do we suppose, it will be until Elon decides on a whim to ban everyone with a Mastodon link in their bio/username?

Update:

@mastodon.social and @mastodon.lol have closed new user registrations.

Most of the larger instances are still open. Consider joining a somewhat less populated instance. There are thousands of instances and each one will give you full access to the fediverse.

Musk’s Twitter has inexplicably suspended the account of @MossawaCenter@twitter.com, a human rights group that promotes equality for Palestinian citizens of Israel.

Public Service Warning

Mastodon has a very big surge of new users right now. There's no way to tell if it will be sustained, but at this early point it looks similar to Nov 18 when when Musk pulled the employee purge.

It is very challenging for system administration to accommodate so many new users. If your server starts to struggle, it is not broken and will get sorted out.

We're all in this together. It's our social network. Be patient. What we are building is amazing.

Confirmed that :birdsite: is censoring people.

If you try to post a link to Mastodon, Twitter flags it as harmful & blocks it from posting.

If you use a link-shortener to change the URL, you can post the message but then Twitter tries to scare-off people who read it by inserting a fake security warning.

@hankgreen because without the algorithm, people know that boosting is more useful than just liking. but I see a fair balance of both in general...

So, things are getting kind of interesting.

In the last few hours the new user rate has jumped from around 1000 per hour to more than 2500 per hour. While this is a big increase, it is nothing like back on Nov 18, when the average was over 10,000 new users per hour.

Still, this does feel like a new surge. Mastodon struggle back in November with the last wave. Let's hope we're ready for what comes next. Big shout out to the amazing admins and moderators all over the world!

Elon claims that linking to ElonJet is "ban evasion." Which is... quite a ridiculous interpretation of "ban evasion."

Decentralisation means less power in the hands of Big Tech, and more power the hands of digital communities.

*** Government agencies and businesses take note! ***

Government agencies and businesses now need to understand this and understand it well. Musk may cut you off from #Twitter without warning, at any time, on any whim. You are unsafe depending on Twitter for anything going forward. Make your plans now to extricate yourself from the Twitter platform, before you become the next victim of his impulsive and deeply toxic behavior.

About a month ago someone asked when Mastodon would start to feel “live” like Twitter does on good days. I said, “the first big news event” and turns out that was not elections or World Cup but bannings that has brought us all together tonight.

Like the old days.

yeah he's basically putting every federated Mastodon instance on the this-site-may-harm-your-computer list now

That he sees Mastodon as a threat is absolutely fascinating.

I'm here watching all of the accounts get banned on twitter. I worry that a lot of the big trans accounts that criticize Musk and LOTT will be next. I know a number of us have been at odds with Musk orbiters.

It is a genuinely sad thing that someone so obviously unsuited to the responsibility has so much power over public discourse online. Twitter had lots of problems, but Musk seems intent on destroying it altogether, and as quickly as possible.
