Things are extremely scary over on the birdsite, and I don't pretend to have all the answers. But I do know that calling for Apple and Google to outright ban apps used by millions of people for all kinds of important things is ... playing with fire and not in line with global human rights. Pushing for moderate at that level of the stack is not going to lead to more safety for LGBTQ+ people or other marginalized folks. It's gonna get us censored & silenced. Sending love to my ppl. I get it

I own activitypub.io, activitypub.network and activitypub.social and want to put them to use somehow.

Some ideas I have:
- activitypub.io: technical guides and implementations
- activitypub.network: server list
- activitypub.social: community group (when groups are ready)

These would be community maintained, and ultimately depend on @cwebber approval, I'd prefer to work with her on these or transfer domains to her rather than them sit unused!

I ❤️ ActivityPub

If you know anyone working on an ActivityPub project and they need any advice/feedback/help or want to spread the word, tell them to DM me! I am more than willing to help or spread awareness! #activitypub #fediverse

@SenSchumer and the people behind the /#kidsOnlineSafetyAct have made it clear that they don't care about kids or people; they don't care how much damage this is going to do to LGBT youth by censoring valuable LGBT information and sex education resources. @EFF @ACLU twitter.com/evan_greer/status/

Updated Quick Scan Server (Instance) List

Here is an updated listing of the top 120 most popular popular Mastodon instances >>>

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d

This is not to suggest that smaller instances are bad. In fact many smaller instance are dealing with the wave of new migrants from the #birdsite better than some larger instances. For a complete list of instances check out >>> mastodon.fediverse.observer/li

Also, a warning to others looking for a #Twitter alternative:

DO NOT use Tribel Social. I looked into it and their Privacy Policy is bad. They collect a lot of unnecessary information from your device, including IMEI numbers.

#Newbies, it might we worth passing that along to your friends. I know a few accounts on Twitter are really pushing it as an alternative.

Every police force everywhere will always want to employ facial recognition, backdoor decryption and armed robots. It’s on us as citizens to make sure they don’t get them.

The #OnlineSafetyBill "threatens 40 million users of WhatsApp and other messengers with constant surveillance of their private messages. It will create a culture of everyday censorship that will disproportionately remove content from vulnerable, disadvantaged, and minority communities while claiming to protect them.”

@jim calls for a complete rethink of the Bill for it to be fit for purpose.

If you see CSEM on Twitter, do not save it, do not screenshot it, do not tweet it to Elon Musk.

Twtter's dedicated report form is here: help.twitter.com/en/forms/safe

Even if Musk fired that team (he seemingly has) use the form and call 1-800-843-5678 to inform the FBI of the report.

I have to say, I am still boost shy here at #Mastodon - Simply because of negative experiences from the other "place". I always feel like I may annoy or over-boost - But then I remember, this is how it works here. This is how we support others and find those who interest us. Strange, shifting to a more enjoyable social media platform.

One slightly frustrating thing about working in communications for human rights causes is seeing a repressive government spend kajillions on international public relations (PR) firms to try to clean up its image.

All the human rights organizations in the world put together couldn’t hope to have the kind of money that even one abusive government can throw at global communications.

What gives me solace, however, is knowing that it hardly ever works...

Quick little tip: You don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon.

All links on Mastodon count for 23 characters towards your limit, no matter how many characters they really are.

However, you need to include https:// at the beginning of links to make them clickable.

I found movetodon.org/ today and it’s the best tool I’ve encountered yet for quickly rebuilding your Twitter following list on Mastodon, without manual imports or the like. (Thanks much @Tibor!)

"Nevertheless, the 'Stop the Sexualization of Children Act' could be used to further implicate adult content as a part of the broader moral panic related to 'grooming content' supposedly taught to minors all over the country." buff.ly/3AJf5y5

The most important thing I learned after Uvalde is that there are over 50,000 school police officers in this country, but they haven't stopped even one school shooting. Instead they've arrested over 1 million kids, mostly students of color. twitter.com/CBSNews/status/159

"Just a day after Tim Pool blamed the victims of the Club Q shooting by having a "grooming event," Elon Musk is palling around with Tim Pool. ELON is implicitly endorsing the calls for violence against LGBTQ people." - Alejandra Caraballo (@Esqueer_@twitter.com and @esqueer )

Another quick PSA for the newcomers:

There is no Mastodon.

As in, there is no entity out there called Mastodon that needs to "get it together" or "make things easier."

Every server is a unique collection of hardware and software operated by a unique team of (usually) volunteer humans funded by (usually) donations.

Some days will be smoother than others. We new folks have flooded the network. Cut the volunteers some slack. Better yet, offer support.

🧵1/9 We’ve signed an open letter to Rishi Sunak about how the #OnlineSafetyBill threatens UK cybersecurity. The Bill introduces content scanning on our devices, compromising end-to-end encryption for individuals and businesses.
