"Bioluminescent Fungi"

Mushrooms that glow in dark, found in Brazil and Vietnam. Glow is result of an interaction between a compound called luciferin and luciferase enzyme in presence of oxygen. There are roughly 80 species of bioluminescent fungi scattered throughout the world.

History of fungal bioluminescence begins with Aristotle in 4th Century BC. For almost two millennia, this incredible phenomenon remained little studied in the literature. #Fungi

Red-headed Fody

A sparrow-like weaver. Red-hooded breeding males are distinctive, but females and non-breeding males are drab. A Comoros endemic that is found in and adjacent to humid forest on the western three islands, and in drier, scrubby lowland habitats on Mayotte. Plumage varies across the different islands. The most distinctive birds, on Grand Comoro, have much less red on the breast than other populations. Can be very similar to Red Fody. Breeding male Red-headed Fody lacks red on the back and belly, though molting male Red Fody can match this pattern. Females and non-breeding males very similar to Red Fody, but Red-headed Fody is larger, darker, and more greenish, with a longer, slightly curved bill. Also similar to female House Sparrow, but distinguished by the more olive-green coloration and the longer bill. Calls are high, silvery notes, given in long series as a song.

Most know that ants dig in the dirt, or maybe they live in a decaying log. But ant nest diversity is vast.

Some ants make "carton" a paper-like substance used to construct nests in trees. Other ants use the silk of their larvae to bind leaves together for a green living next. Some ground-nesting ants build flood levies in concentric circles to protect the entrance from monsoon rains. And of course, there are the wood ants who make massive mounds of pine needles.

Ants made all of these!
