When I left Twitter for Mastodon, I was disappointed how white it is here. I stayed because I believed, in time, Twitter would fail and some alternative would emerge.

It’s *finally* becoming less white here. People of Color are arriving in droves, including personal friends and creators I followed on other media.

Y’all: we can’t mess this up. Don’t clutch pearls or hold up sacred cows. White monoculture is problematic, sure. But it’s also boring as hell.

I’m here for a more alive Mastodon.

I really like the favorite/boost/bookmark distinctions. I also like the fact that here you have to go back to the original post to talk--my brain says lovechild of Twitter and Pillowfort. Also, accountability, woohoo!

So. In my view.

Favorite: HEY YOU this was a COOL THING.

Boost: HEY EVERYONE this was a COOL THING.

Bookmark: HEY ME don't forget about this COOL THING.

Reply: OMG WHAT A COOL THING can we TALK about it?

It took me exactly 25 days to go from "WTF is Mastodon" to "I'm an instance admin now" 🤪 #mastoadmin

John von Neumann’s wife, Klára Dán, asked him to put a picture of an elephant in his book “Theory of Games and Economic Behavior”. He complied, hiding one in plain sight in a set theoretic diagram.

There’s reason to believe Klára’s code was the first modern-style code ever to run on a computer.

You can dive into Klára’s life and work by listening to season 2 of “Lost Women of Science” podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/

Very excited to be attending this talk by prof. Julia Rubin. She will talk about the time she spent in industry, as well as her experience in academia. I'm thinking about my future career and whether I want it to be in academia and/or in industry, so I'm looking forward to hearing her insights.

@KBGreenParty
@rbkgreens
@TWGreens
@bristolgreen
@SouthTyneGreens
@BroadlandGreens
@WandBGreenParty

Hopefully a lot more will soon be setting up accounts here.

The folk custom year so far in West Cornwall. Traditions endure and change with each generation down here, some seemingly more precarious than others. Wassailing, The May Horns, The Feast of St.John’s Eve & Crying the Neck are always enjoyable. A few other events I missed but Montol on midwinter will be the one most in Penzance will be looking forward for. There’s many more customs about of which I will one day I will also document. #folklore #cornwall

@juergen_hubert @northfolk I honestly I think the teller forgot halfway through. Reading edited folktale collections, one tends to forget that oral tellers made all kinds of mistakes in spoken word.
I get criticism from people for "tampering with the original text." Dude, the original text did not make sense because the storyteller got distracted halfway through.

#ThrowbackThursday to the day I saw a red fox in the wild for the very first time. Foxes are not very prominent figures in Canada, especially when compared to the UK when you can spot them fairly easily even in big cities like London. Here, the urban settings are dominated by trash pandas (raccoons). 🙄

Anyway, I didn't have a zoom lens handy (I have a fixed, pancake lens on my camera 90% of the time) but I think the photo still turned up okay.

My first post and for #FungiFriday this lovely bit of very wobbly Amber Jelly Fungus, Exidia recisa. Well named, as it glowed a beautiful amber when the sun shone through it briefly! 🤎#fungi

My First Astrophotography. Another shot of the milky way near Crater Lake, Oregon. This time a car drove past and I got super annoyed thinking it would've spoliled the shot, but maybe it worked?

Was I supposed to use hashtags in my intro like we used to on old timey Twitter? Omg. I promise y’all I will learn how to use this app properly soon.
