Big thread floating about on here about space travel, starting with talk about the risks of forced labour in space mining and ending with talk of economic justification. This reminds me why I’m disillusioned with space travel enthusiasts. Humanity needs to unlearn all this capitalist nonsense. It’s the only way to build a future that’s worthwhile.

A thousand years ago, parts of the world were run by small kings, sitting in small fortresses on small hills, using small armies to rule their small kingdoms. They couldn’t imagine a world run any differently.

I very much hope that a thousand years into the future, the idea of a world run by corporations and financial incentives appears similarly quaint and shortsighted.

First bad experience with a carer today. My nightmare scenario of telling me how filthy my house is and why does she have to help me clean anyway? 🙁 Feeling very attacked and very small and ashamed. A great opportunity for my Buddhist practice, I guess, but it feels crap.

Dear Friends of the Living and Dead,

Visited our local bee apiary, wildlife sanctuary and cemetery. Planted some sunflowers for the birds. Might be a bit early but worth the risk.

Saw Spring and Summer plants, parakeets etc. A quiet oasis in an urban environment.

The beauty of nature insists on taking its time. Everything is prepared. Nothing is rushed. The rhythm of emergence is a gradual, slow beat; always inching its way forward, change remains faithful to itself until the new unfolds in the confidence of true arrival. Because nothing is abrupt, the beginning of spring nearly always catches us unawares. It is there before we see it; and then we can look nowhere without seeing it.

Long thread/21

But the money, power, space and peace that we get from looking after one another has another benefit: freeing us up to demand *more* change, more equality, more democratic accountability.

Quart's case-studies of organizers and rank-and-file in different movements are prescriptions for systemic changes, while her urgent case for reframing how we think of ourselves and our society present an individual-scale project for all of us.

When I make videos with willing aware volunteers, I'm judged for not paying them the money that I don't have.

When putting art out in the world, I'm judged for advertising as if that's what I do.

When speaking my truth and lived experiences about gender, mental health and the climate emergency, I face people who try to silence me while preaching freedom of speech.

But when I get one person a day telling me that what I do inspires them, I know I can reach millions and I'm here to stay.

My favourite from this mornings walk around Stockers Lake is this cheerful singing little Wren. Photo taken through the thick shrub, but that's nothing new when photographing Wrens 😂

I’m realizing that growing up as a wired magazine-reading cyberpunk believer— a kid who thought adbusters and the internet could save the world— and then watching as every technological miracle was turned not towards revolution or saving humanity but instead more pernicious and intractable methods of exploitation has made me uncomfortable with technological optimism. “assume all new technology will be used against you” —

I’d been thinking recently that I didn’t have much anger in me anymore…but of course that’s not true. It just turns out that my anger, instead of being directed at any particular person, is mostly buried, seething rage at the social injustices of society of which pandemic denial is just the tip of the iceberg. I just don’t let myself feel it very often, which is something for me to work through.
