People keep @'ing me claiming that Musk spent $44 billion to destroy Twitter> i.e., that he is deliberately tanking the company.

I guess anything is possible, but I've seen absolutely nothing that supports that theory is true.

Perhaps if it does get destroyed he'll retcon that as an explanation, but I do not buy that he deliberately set billions of dollars on fire like that.

@mmasnick You interested in a serious exchange of ideas? Because I think what you say is both right and incomplete. Elon Musk clearly did not intend to throw away $44 Billion. However, once his lawyers told him he'd lose the case he decided to pay the money and see what he could do with an investment four times the value of the company. His incompetence meant he's destroyed what value it did have to anyone and he's paying the price. However, why did he want control of it? To manipulate elections

@TomDelargy i don't buy that at all either. 1. Twitter is relatively small, and it's not clear that it actually has much, if any, impact on elections. 2. Musk honestly just doesn't seem that interested in the election stuff. He just wants people to love him.

@mmasnick Sorry. But we're clearly living on different planets.

@TomDelargy @mmasnick He could have bought most of the major US news networks (all together!) for the price he bought Twitter.
If affecting elections was his goal, then he chose some really dumb methods.
Then again, we already know he has a history of choosing dumb methods so 🤷‍♂️
