I'd like to see a thriving Mastodon ecosystem, including good content moderation. Maybe that needs philanthropy and membership models. (Short version, needs way more discussion.)

@craignewmark

We have all these layers:

1. ActivityPub Protocol (w3.org/TR/activitypub/) W3 is doing this.
2. Server Software (Mastodon, Mastodon forks eg #Hometown, Alternate Microblogging software et #misskey)
3. Client Software (For Mastodon half of this is built in to the server, the other half are the apps ) Alternate Microblogging apps.
4. Fediverse (Best thought of as preventing "bad actors" in the sense of spam and virus sense)
5. ?????
6. Individual Servers
7. Individual users

@craignewmark

What is missing is some level of organization at #5. A group of servers that operates within the fediverse, but that might not include all of it.

Call it "Basic Minimal Moderation Agreement"

I've run into way too many people who want nothing to do with the fediverse when they find out it's more for extreme bad actors.

"Well your sever can help you"

That's true, but it doesn't make the wider space any less toxic. But, how to get a large group on the same page?

@futurebird @craignewmark It's been tried. Search for "United Federation of Instances". It was a huge disaster that contributed to the guy running it having a heart attack.
