Jay Kuo looks at the decision of Meta and Instagram to let Trump back onto their platforms as "hate speech, misinformation, doxxing, and grift are proliferating online," and asks "whether the 'marketplace of ideas' is functioning as a healthy exchange or simply breeding new and lethal dangers."

He concludes that what's going on is not the marketplace of ideas trying to do self correction.

Instead, Kuo concludes,
"In each of these cases, the decision whether to silence or unleash speech was not made by some invisible hand of the market, but rather by the whims of a few rich and powerful men. …

This isn’t a marketplace of ideas, it’s an oligopoly."

@wdlindsy If that were true, Twitter Blue would be a raging success.

Instead, the marketplace of ideas spoke.

@LouisIngenthron An interesting marketplace of ideas with one super-rich man at the top of its structure, pulling the strings.

Jay Kuo is exactly right.

@wdlindsy He doesn't have control of anything but his own little fief, and he doesn't really even have control over that.

Meanwhile, the marketplace of ideas is punishing him for his transgressions by devaluing every company in which he has an ownership stake.

Musk now holds the record for the most net worth lost by an individual in a single year. In human history.
That's the marketplace of ideas in action.

@LouisIngenthron He doesn't have control of anything but his own little fief? Really?

Twitter and Facebook (i.e., Zuckerberg) don't exercise tremendous control over systems of disinformation and media systems that have supplanted mainstream media?

I'd have thought the opposite is patently obvious given how these platforms affect public opinion globally.

@wdlindsy If you think Musk/Zuckerberg are in full control of that instead of just holding on to the reins for dear life while reacting as best they can, I've got a bridge to sell you.

The social body that makes up social media is as much a living thing as all of us who take part in it.

Rich people will probably always have outsized influence, but that doesn't mean they control what we think or say.
