Humans have yet to adapt to driving motorized vehicles without incurring tens of thousands of deaths each year. In my own country we are unable to put a stop to murders and mass murders by gunfire, or to curb our addiction to fossil fuels. As humans we routinely fail or refuse to treat all of our human family with respect.

How can anyone be optimistic about our ability to adapt quickly and responsibly to the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence?

@bjsmith We don't. We just have to believe, as with most novel technologies, that the good can outweigh the bad, especially in the long run. "Quick and responsible adaptation" simply isn't in our species description. We're messy creatures.
