Seems like classic "correlation, not causation" to me.
Nearly all humans have empathy for those close to them, but to gain empathy for strangers typically requires being exposed to a lot of different people you don't know... AKA everyday living in high-density locations.
Likewise, bikes don't work anywhere near as well in spread out areas, but they work great in dense urban areas where everything you'd ever need is only a couple blocks away. And, let's not forget that such locations often have better and cheaper delivery coverage, filling in the gaps for bikes, making them more viable.
To draw a connection between the two, other than "they both work well in population-dense areas" seems silly and fallacious.
