Paraphrasing Mark Twain, the reports of spherules found in the Pacific ocean having an extrasolar origin have been greatly exaggerated.

@astro_jcm Ahh, I knew that story screamed bullshit. Do you have a source with a link to a definitive debunk I can attach to my 'told-ya-so's?

@LouisIngenthron There are several that I know of:

* Not sure if he's on Masto, but Steve Desch posted today on Twitter a very extensive point-by-point debunking of the whole thing: twitter.com/Deschscoveries/sta

* This piece on Science is also very good: science.org/content/article/di

@LouisIngenthron @astro_jcm

I figured it was debris from deorbited satellites or other space junk Not every nation used the space cemetery that is east of New Zealand or managed to miss that zone Like China just YOLO's their debris reentry, other countries just figure, eh close enough

@defrisselle @astro_jcm Eh, I bought that it was a meteor; those are common enough. It's just the "extrasolar" claim that was specious.
