What is the spookiest or creepiest story that's supposed to be for children and why?
@RickiTarr This is just straight-up nightmare fuel for children, and the illustrations make it all the worse.

@erimichkea @RickiTarr Half the adults who read it as kids still tremble at its name. The other half have managed to block the memory, but risk insanity upon seeing the cover as it all comes flooding back.

I dunno, I was always a bit of a scaredy cat and that book never bothered me much. I think I would've been about 6 or so when I encountered it.
For a while my sister got really, really interested in Lizzy Borden lore (libel, but I didn't know that then). That had a bigger impact on me, though I'm not sure how much of it was the story itself, or because I believed it was true or how much was just her really selling it... and being creepy about it.

@LouisIngenthron @RickiTarr Can confirm. I loaned it from the library when I was a kid and got so scared at one point I was crying. I returned the book to the library.
At age 48 I said 'it's time', and purchased a copy for my Kobo and read through the entire thing in one night. It's just as gory and graphic as I remember.

@darrenmorin @RickiTarr The second two don't *quite* reach the horrible heights of the first, but they are certainly worthy successors.
