Worldwide antisemitism surge — jewishinsider.com/2023/10/dail

Has nothing to do with #Israel & #Gaza. #Jews around the world are not & do not speak for the government of Israel. #Antisemitism is antisemitism. It is not a legitimate protest against actions of a government with which one disagrees, not an exercise of #FreeSpeech. It is #HateSpeech & #hate directed against #Jewish people. Innocent civilians were targeted by #Hamas on October 7, not military targets. Don't conflate the two. No "but..."

@RunRichRun Opposing a regime that's actively committing war crimes is not antisemitism.

@LouisIngenthron Please reread my post. Before the inexcusable and barbaric attacks of October 7, many Jews and Jewish organizations on the left were among the harshest critics of the government assembled by Netanyahu after the last election. Criticizing that government is not what I referred to throughout the post. The antisemitism described across the US, here: jta.org/2023/10/30/politics/wh and around the world, here: jewishinsider.com/2023/10/dail is antisemitism, not criticism of a particular government.

@RunRichRun The stuff across the world, especially in Russia, I wholeheartedly agree with you on.

But the local stuff is just college kids being contrarian idiots. That's what college kids do. I had a Che Guevara flag when I was in college. We shouldn't read too much into that.

@LouisIngenthron Wish that what you say re. college kids was true. But no students on campus should be made to feel unsafe. It should not be the campus security services that lock students into a library for their safety and to keep an angry mob away from them. Threats of stabbing "pigs" should be called out and investigated. Those are threats. Blaming murdered civilians for their own deaths twists all logic...

Singling out Jews, Muslims or other groups—LGBTQ—is dangerous. They're not enemies.

@RunRichRun I agree. Any time violence is used, it's wrong and those who perpetrate it should be held responsible.

But that's very different from the many pro-Palestine protesters who are peaceful and yet are being labelled "antisemites" and being subjected to hatred as well. The lines are being blurred by those who seek to cause division.

@LouisIngenthron Timing matters. Many pro-Palestine demonstrations only came about post the October 7 massacre in Israel. Many Israelis were calling for peace & a two-state solution before October 7. The growth of visible Palestinian support (crowds in the tens of thousands, etc.) only began after the Israeli government's response to events of Oct. 7. Hamas has been no friend to the Palestinian people. Denouncing Hamas & supporting a solution where two peoples could live in peace would be good.

@RunRichRun @LouisIngenthron Well, post Oct 7. Israel went with a rethoric that would be understandable as a short outburst at most. However it escalated from a short outburst to an unprecedented genocidal bombardment, starving off people and complete disregard for Palestinians lives.

It is the similar case as with protests against russian invasion on Ukraine. War in Donbas has started years before, yet there is something about genocidal rethoric and mass bombardment.

@RunRichRun @LouisIngenthron My take is that some lines were crossed. It does not excuse attacking random Jews, but I feel frustrated seeing that the west is reluctant to recognize crimes of Izrael. Seeing politicians speaking for murdered Israelis, but silent about Palestinians. Seeing years of inaction that is maintained even now.

My feelings are hard to put in a toot. Yet more injustice that will go unpunished and unfixed.

@PiTau @LouisIngenthron
It is all very problematic. Hamas is no friend of the Palestinian people and also remain committed to the elimination of Israel.

Just today or yesterday, a Hamas official stated that the tunnels which run under mosques, hospitals, churches, apartment buildings, schools — the civilian parts of society — are for their terrorists, while Israel and the UN are responsible for the safety of the Palestinian people.

What to do?

@RunRichRun @LouisIngenthron Framing current events as defense is buffling. Apartheid, illegal settlements and de facto open air prison in Gaza. One cannot manufacture the situation for decades, cross the lines without any regard, then claim they are being attacked because someone else crossed the lines.

Stop the invasion, trade prisoners, abolish apartheid, return to 1967 borders and recognize Palestine as a state while backing Fatah.

Impossible? Then Israel is impossible without a genocide.
