@charlotteclymer I was certain that there was no way America would be dumb enough to nominate, much less elect, Trump in 2016, so there's a lot of doubt in my mind now.
@DebR @LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer If Americans do not wake up and smell the coffee, I do not see a very bright future for our country. What we are seeing now is just a preview of what is to come, and it will be ugly.
@DebR @LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer yep, said the same thing as my wife reminds me frequently lol.
I think the issue is that external factors can swing a close race, and as mind boggling as it is, 2016 and 2024 we're/are close enough that is entirely possible.
@LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer I had that same thought about Dubya in 2000, so Trump wasn’t shocking, just horrifying.
@LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer Americans didn’t elect Trump in 2016. A rigged system called the electoral college did. It gives outsized power to rural states with very few people. It also gives 100% of votes from a state won by only 51% of the voters. It also gives massive amount of power to states with excessive gerrymandering, which disincentivizes voting from those who know their local elections are already rigged against them. One can become president without even getting close to a majority of Americans voting for them.
@mls14 @LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer
Thank you, well said
@mls14 @LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer importantly, it's not like this system has been fixed since 2016 or 2020... So it's a very real possibility that it could happen again.
@avocado_toast @LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer Yep, until enough people rise up and demand some amendments to the constitution, millions will live under minority rule. We saw what it takes to change things in 2008. Massive young voter turnout. Even many “red” states would be “blue” if every citizen aged 18-30 voted.
@mls14 @LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer all of that is true and we need to change the parts of it we can, and work around the rest
@LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer
We didn't elect him. He didn't win the popular vote.
@kcanales02 @charlotteclymer So what? That's like saying a burger joint isn't popular because it doesn't sell many carrots. It's simply not the metric that was agreed upon before the vote.
@LouisIngenthron @charlotteclymer I remember saying that very thing before the election. “Americans are not stupid enough to elect that idiot.” I have never been so wrong about anything in my life. What has followed has been appalling. Our government is now made up of anti-American, greedy, racist opportunists. They were probably there all along but trump enabled them.
