I come from a generation of computer nerds that got suspicious when a single character appeared where it didn't belong. "Stop everything we must have a virus". Our little Commodores didn't even have important info in them.

People installing apps at will on their personal devices that include banking / biometric details, is mind blowing to me.

WhatsApp is the most advanced virus spyware malicious code ever made. People install it *willfully* I have lost a lot of connections because I refuse to.

@selzero So, there are none of the conversational apps you'd use ?

@Roadwarrior29

Signal is preferred, but most people find it hard, Telegram is an ok compromise, those that have agreed to install Telegram I have managed to keep as friends, yeah, I'm that guy 🤣

@Roadwarrior29 all software will have flaws.

WhatsApp makes 8 billion a year selling access to your data, and to VIP customers (normally nation governments), your whole device.

WhatsApp includes code that can remotely install other applications, make it look like you had a phone call, or sent an SMS.

These services are sold over 3rd party institutions. Whenever found out they get scapegoated, Meta claims it was a "bug". Rinse and repeat.

@Roadwarrior29

Erdogan took down his rivals by getting courts to declare that installing the app Bylock was proof of membership of a terrorist organization, paying Zuck to install it over WhatsApp on his rivals phones, and the poor bastards are still in prison.

This is deliberately designed malicious code.

@selzero @Roadwarrior29 how does what you claimed in your first statement support the second? You just seem to be stringing together random thoughts

@giantfuzzyelephant @Roadwarrior29

- Meta works with 3rd parties to sell backdoors.

- Governments use these backdoors

Which part is confusing?

Follow

@selzero @giantfuzzyelephant @Roadwarrior29 Meta doesn't make operating systems. So, to do what you described, they'd have to be exploiting backdoors in other companies' software, and that would be big news, and also the kind of claim that would need to be backed up by a serious source.

@LouisIngenthron @giantfuzzyelephant@mas.to @Roadwarrior29

So you don't know about the now (in)famous backdoors in Whatsapp that lead to governments secretly installing software on peoples phones and all the drama and legal action that has resulted from it?
