Speaking of AI art models...

If we take the use of copyrighted images out of the equation, let's say hypothetically that a new model, trained only on the art of consenting artists and the public domain, could produce as good art as Midjurney currently does...

Do you think it is still morally and ethically wrong to use it?

(Boost to help me satisfy my curiosity if you want :3)

@guihn288 Yes, because however ethical the creation might be in simple terms of what is created, the amount of energy and water required to create it can never be morally justifiable.

Running these systems for any non-essential purpose in a catastrophic climate crisis is unforgivable.

@RolloTreadway @guihn288 I run models on my gaming PC. They take a few minutes. No water. No significant extra energy.

Do you also refuse to play online games or use photo- and video-sharing apps for the same reason?

@LouisIngenthron @guihn288 Good for you. Now feel free to read up on how much energy and water large AI systems use, and how much more it is than almost any other purpose.

Follow

@RolloTreadway @guihn288 They almost certainly use less than YouTube and Netflix and TikTok's servers.

Also, the water they "use" doesn't vanish. It's turned into steam and returned to the natural water cycle.
