"Agents say another common technique for restricting unprofitable growth is insisting on hard-to-locate paperwork upfront. Proof that the plumbing’s been updated, say, or documentation of work done on the roof. 'It’s a way to say, we don’t want the business,'"

"Other states deserted by many big insurers, including Florida, are trying to tempt companies back by making it harder for policyholders to sue them. "

Yes, the old "fool consumers into thinking they have coverage" solution.

In all seriousness, since coverage is required by mortgage-lenders, when do mortgage lenders get wise to this trick?

@annmlipton If kegislation exists that makes it hard to sue a company, should you be doing business with that company?

@BritishTechGuru I mean, no, but (1) homeowners likely don't realize how much they'll get screwed if they make a claim and (2) in some of these areas, there aren't a whole lot of choices if you need insurance, like, to get a mortgage

@annmlipton Everybody should read any contract they sign. Not just a 5 minute glance through but take home, read in depth, study and take a few days over.

I have rejected contracts of employment having read them. It is possible to amend contracts carefully with a pen. If the agent does not read it then that's on him and you don't need to draw his attention to it. Having signed it though, they cannot then back out without facing liability for breach of contract.

@BritishTechGuru @annmlipton Sure, but then after you read it, you're faced with the choice of moving out of state, never owning property, or signing a bad contract.

@LouisIngenthron @BritishTechGuru Reading doesn't get you far if understanding the language requires a law degree and knowledge of caselaw interpretations over the last 20 years across multiple states

@annmlipton @BritishTechGuru And it requires you to anticipate the actions of lawmakers who are currently busy with (checks notes) arguing with a mouse and taking books from children.

@annmlipton @LouisIngenthron@qoto.org

If it cies case law, that's easy to look up. These documents are not complicated. Just take it a sentence at a time.

@annmlipton One of the attorneys I knew, looked over some of my court filings and his comment was "this is high quality legal work".

The difference between me and a legal professional is I have to spend ages researching mundane things that most law students get handed as part of their studies.

@BritishTechGuru well, glad you totally underrstand the american legal system. congratulations to you.

@annmlipton It's based on the UK system and that in turn comes from the Magna Carta. All broadly similar but with quirks.

@BritishTechGuru yup, you're 100% correct. no differences that signify. congratulations.

@annmlipton

I don't understand why you feel the need to be so snarky with your responses.

Maybe it's a good thing I never went to Tulane.

@BritishTechGuru Well, you have nothing to learn so that's probably true.
