So perhaps Boeing makes unsafe planes because of woke DEI or perhaps, just maybe, it's because the last time they killed a bunch of people just five years ago they got away with it and not a single manager or executive responsible was prosecuted? fortune.com/2024/01/09/boeing-

@maxkennerly Let's not jump to conclusions. I've seen a lot of people blame Boeing, but the NTSB hasn't released that info yet. It could very well be Alaska Air's fault for not properly maintaining the craft.

We should wait for the NTSB report before blaming anyone.

That plane was three months old, the likelihood that Alaska MX had that door plug open/off at any point since delivery is near 0. Meanwhile other airlines are finding improperly assembled components of the door plugs on their MAX 9s.

@cc587 So what? Tightening and replacing bolts is standard maintenance. If that wasn't done (properly), they may be liable.

@LouisIngenthron
It is not SOP for an Airline to completely disassemble and reassemble an aircraft upon delivery. The door plug is not a line maintenance check item. The only time it would come off is during heavy maintenance (which a three month old aircraft is a long way away from) or if the aircraft was converted to a high density seating arrangement and it needed to be replaced with an actual door.

@LouisIngenthron Alaska likely wouldn't touch this door after delivery until the aircraft's first C or D check, which happen at 2-3 and 9-12 years, respectively. It's not standard practice to subject a brand new plane to a C or D check (they can cost up to 10% as much as the plane, so it would be a big deal & Alaska would want Boeing to pay for it).

Unless Alaska specifically had worked on the door plug it's very unlikely that their maintenance operation would be seen as responsible.

@LouisIngenthron @cc587

Do you actually know something or are you simply espousing contrarianism?

@RnDanger @cc587 I have some domain knowledge (I fly smaller planes and check every bolt before I fly each time). I know it doesn't apply 1:1 to the big jets, but it does apply to some extent.

I'm not saying it isn't Boeing's fault. I'm saying we should wait for the opinion of the expert investigators before laying blame.

@LouisIngenthron @cc587
That's fair. It looks very damning from what I've read though.
