I am gonna die on this hill, and I know GenZ doesn't agree, but I am "gay". I am NOT queer.

The word "queer" was used negatively against my generation and the pain is still there. I cannot bring myself to try to "reclaim" it. People who did not have it used as a weapon against them feel differently. BUT I am not queer, I am gay. That's specific. I have female friends who require the word "lesbian" to be used when referring to them.

Do not try to take that away from us, GenZ.

@jann I mean, I get it. "Queer" is meant to be an umbrella term that doesn't require one to list off a dozen letters in the right order. In that regard, it's the best option I've heard so far.

@LouisIngenthron There is nothing wrong with LGBTQ ... nothing. It's been used for decades.

@jann LGBT has been used for decades, and even that is a modification of the earlier LGB.
It's curious that you include the newer variant with the Q when you don't like what it stands for.

But there are dozens of other variations that some people prefer, like "LGBTQ+" "LGBTQIA+" "2SLGBTQ+" "LGBTQQ" "LGBTIH" etc. Trying to include everyone becomes unwieldy, so a generic term becomes preferable.

@LouisIngenthron It's not "curious", since it's been in use for well over a decade, it's proper.

Fine, if a generic term is required, create one. Don't use one with obvious HORRIBLE usages in the past. That's all I'm saying.

Certain GenZ folks are using this term generically and wondering why people [LGBT] are offended. That's why.

It was hurtful well-within our lifetime. They're grabbing a derogatory term and applying it to me. I do NOT agree! There ARE queer men. I am NOT one of them.
