@nibble4bits Except that symbol long predates them. They just co-opted it. Mocking the symbol does nothing but devalue it further.
There is merit in the ideas that flag originally represented, even before considering how it's a part of our shared heritage.
But more importantly, mocking it plays right into their strategy, allowing them to control the narrative while giving them ammo for how "un-American" their opponents are.
@mmasnick The best pecan might beat the best pumpkin, but pecan pie quality varies waaaay too much and it's hard to fuck up pumpkin pie.
@trinsec No, that's totally valid criticism. On the other hand, though, it means the episodes that do go dark are that much more effective.
@trinsec The audio is rough and the 70s hairstyles are rougher, but the rest is holding up pretty good so far.

@trinsec Finding a home for some kids who were orphaned (the same number as puppies in the sack) along with finding a home for the puppies.

I'm watching Little House on the Prairie (don't ask) and this show goes *waay* harder than I expected it to.
An episode in the second season opens with a nameless man putting a bunch of cute puppies in a sack and throwing it in a river to drown them.
After the attempted puppycide, *this man is never mentioned or seen again*.
The episode isn't about him at all; it was just a brutal metaphor for the later subject matter.
@richieholland Can we please use the migration as an opportunity to kill the "Retweet/Boost this if X" format? More often than not, it's followed by only the cheapest and shallowest possible engagement-bait.
If people like your content, they can boost it without being told to.
@Nick_Craver Probably doesn't help that most academics describe performance in unitless terms like O(n).
The one area where your observation is very untrue, though, is game development. A smooth 30/60 frames per second is a benchmark anyone can compare against.
@annmlipton The beauty of the Fediverse is that each server can have custom features.
In QOTO for example, we have QTs, should we decide to use them.
@Biggles @Pat @Adrasteianix @freemo And the third category: those who tacitly participate in, and uphold, ongoing systemic harm because of ignorance and/or indifference.
@Pat @Biggles @freemo @Adrasteianix So your rhetorical poll that you weren't expecting responses to (despite having immediately voted yes on it yourself) didn't go the way you expected.
That's because of a simple miscalculation: I don't expect everyone to be angels all the time. I just expect at least half of people to not be complete shitheads when it counts.
I can't honestly say that those meager expectations have always been met in the past, but I think on a long enough timescale, this mechanism moves us slowly-but-surely in the right direction.
@annmlipton What are the ramifications of this?
@skrishna You might also consider QOTO .org, given your background.
Lots of really nice STEM folks here, and good, engaged moderators.
@garyackerman That sounds nice in theory, but my experience with reality is that they only care about one criteria: cost. Doesn't matter how insecure and unusable it is.
