There are a lot of terrible #Section230 takes, but this one is magnificently stupid:

@ihrf Nonsense. It's an exercise of freedom of association, not a violation of freedom of expression. Nobody is being forced to use any social media platform.
@mathlover @Romaq @freemo Agreed, I'm not excusing the toxic behaviour. That's still inexcusable.
@Romaq I'd argue they're only the mascot of the true monster. People like that wouldn't exist if there wasn't a demand for them.
birbsite analysis
@postmodern Strongly disagree.
The vote's result probably won't actually matter to how Twitter is managed.
It will, however, matter greatly to the ego of the man in charge.
That's reason enough to vote YES.
@questauthority Glad you made the jump!
I've been here a little over a month and it's way better once you get used to the little incongruities.
Just know that you have to do a little more work to curate your feed here; the algorithm doesn't do it for you. Also, there's a culture here of content warnings where appropriate and accessibility features (i.e. image alt text). Takes a little time to get used to, but it's mostly reasonable stuff.
@mmasnick @felixthehat It worked just fine for me, lol.
@jmiers230 @cathygellis @neil In theory, there's nothing preventing someone from forking the masto code and running a server with a curated algorithm.
In practice, though, you can follow hashtags and look at who people you follow follow themselves to add to your list. It takes a little time, but it's not that hard to get to the sweet spot of content where Twitter was.
That said, though, I always used Twitter in "latest tweets" mode, so this transition was a bit easier for me.
@GreenFire I suppose it depends which server they join and how well they behave themselves.
@mattblaze Agreed. I get why the reporters would want to keep their accounts (what's happening with the site is newsworthy after all), but the corps should close shop ASAP.
@annmlipton It already is an option. You just have to sign up for an instance that has it enabled.
@arstechnica Ridiculous. Art isn't defined by the amount of time it takes to make.
@micahflee If you haven't deleted them already, it's far too late.
The time was before he took over, and even then, it was likely there were archives.
@jmiers230 Sure, but you may want to put it behind a Content Warning. Some folks call them "content wrappers" and use them like subject lines. Some folks won't boost your posts if you don't CW properly.
Bird site, free speech
I have to call bullshit on this. The comic is correct.
The problem is, when you go to a white supremacist house party, they're going to consider the anti-racists to be assholes and show them the door. That doesn't mean the anti-racists *are* assholes.
The argument in the comic isn't "shallow." It's principled. It applies no matter who is doing the "censoring".
The key is that "censoring" only matters if you respect the opinion of the censor. If you don't, you can just ignore them and their property/platform.
And if there's anyone who still legitimately respects the leadership of Twitter, I've got a bridge to sell you.
@juddlegum So anyone who retweets him gets banned, right?
@annmlipton Bingo. Musk is every little kid who discovered they could host their own video game server and get admin god powers over their friends.
And, like every one of those kids, he's abusing the power so it's fun for nobody but him, and will soon find himself alone.
