@bwbeach Yeah, but the difference is that, as developers, we're encouraged *not* to break the system.

I don't think the same can be said to be true about politicians.

I’m grateful that we have a president who honors and pays tribute to our fallen heroes, and doesn’t consider them “losers” and “suckers.”

@jeffjarvis @emilymbender Yeah, but how do you do that? You'd have to convert all the input data it learns from to use that grammar, and then it would start quoting people and articles as if they were written by a computer.

Properly thinking machines should be able to be taught to do what you describe. But these mad libs LLMs are only as good as their input.

@fishecon Gotta replace all the deported immigrants and pregnant teenagers and COVID deaths somehow.

@cami Well, yeah, most of the hotels that are worth going to in this state are in solid blue areas where every second nearby business has a "safe space" sticker with a pride flag on it.

Florida is not a hateful monolith. It's a gerrymandered mess where the rural areas get to override the will of the folks in the cities because the national dem party abandoned us.

I understand why you made the decision you did, but it's worth considering that the businesses and people that lost out on your tourism dollars are generally the ones fighting hardest against the injustice you protest.

Finally discovered why my C: drive is full... apparently I've got about a hundred different old .NET SDKs installed.

@pieist Ah, my most sincere apologies. I couldn't detect that detail in your profile pic.

@pieist The UN passed a law against that in 1863! You can be drawn and quartered if you don't unblock.

They took 15 minutes to cook more, which okay, but then it came out burnt 🤦‍♂️

Cursey Alex hates Nazi's

@mentallyalex Ah, speedrunning the Godwin curve.

I'm at a Pollo Tropical and there are only like two other customers and yet the restaurant is totally out of cooked pollo. Crazy.

Cursey Alex hates Nazi's

@mentallyalex You sure it was legit hate? Or was it just a cry for attention from a dumb teenager?

@peterdrake Your characterization is correct.

"If this is accurate, would the same thing happen if position was a field rather than a property?"

No, if it was a field, you would be able to set x directly, because you'd be operating directly on the actual position's values in memory. But when using an implicit property getter for a non-reference value (like a struct), you get a copy instead.

"It may also be that the "getter" for position creates a new Vector3 for more complicated reasons involving global vs local positions"

Pretty sure this is true, but it does have both a getter and a setter, so something like "transform.position += Vector3.right;" works as intended.

"I'm guessing Unity made Vector3 and Quaternion structs for efficiency reasons"

I think it's more about data integrity. Remember, if they made it a class, then I stored a reference to that position as a local variable, that reference would still be pointing to the transform's position. So, assigning a vertex to a transform's position would inadvertently link the two, and changing one would change the other. Forcing the copy behaviour ensures that you only change the actual position when you really mean to and prevents much harder-to-find bugs from popping up.

@peterdrake That's not quite accurate. It's because position is a property *and* a struct. This is actually a C# thing moreso than a Unity thing. You can change members of class properties or struct variables just fine. Unity made the choice to have core math structures like Vectors and Quaternions be structs, presumably to impart a degree of immutability.

My students are often shocked/dismayed when I point out that after the original gorilla mislabeling fiasco, they simply removed the ability to label anything as "gorilla" rather than address the core problem (and if the problem isn't fixable...maybe we shouldn't pursue face labels at all?). The journey continues to this day.... nytimes.com/2023/05/22/technol

@jann If the jets follow the same system as smaller planes, then the windows are just held in place with a small metal clip. Once you rotate the clip 90 degrees, the window swings out on a spring. So, in theory, it should be just as easy as slim-jimming a car lock.

@briannawu @jenalyze I'd argue that de-anonymizing them wouldn't make them better people, or even cause them to behave particularly differently. The problem isn't anonymity... it's lack of accountability.

@alecui @freemo I mean, I think @freemo mentioned it earlier, but it all depends on time and place. If I'm writing a formal letter, I probably do want to follow the rules. In other situations, like social media, it matters a lot less and I'll use shorthands like "Otoh".
